July MMC: Robotic limbs
Use to do technical drawings for every part of my imaginary robot before I started working in 3D, right down to the wiring of the electrical motors to the power packs and the mechanics of the actuators and jacks and piston and axles etc...
Ideal subject for this months challenge
Might try and dig up those old drawings and scan them in for reference...

Great Thenus...now remember you don't have to do it all, just a part. Can't wait to see it all work out.

Re: July MMC: Robotic limbs
Started out by making the basic shape with basic sub devision layers... this pic shows the steps to get to the hollow main limb
Did the same for the top hinge/joint... more subdivs and a cylinder...
The took a hollow one and cut out a section to put the main innards in that will be refined later...

Great start my friend. Question. On the first cylinder, how did you hollow it out?

tnx rjeff...
make a copy of the cylinder, shrink/scale it on all axis and then scale it just vertically/y-axis... lastly, boolean subtract...

You could also use the Shell option if using workspace to create the cylinder.

tnx clintonman, did forget about the shell option... will try that out as well...
here are some updates...
Added some detail to the edges of the hatchway…

Surface clutter detail to make the outside of the object look more interesting…

More surface clutter artefacts…

I'm not sure what it is, but it's quite phallic in symbolism!

Very nice!
I myself will be doing some similar work on a cyborg oriented project soon. I've been finding it tough figuring out how all the moving parts will work out.. once ive got it all figured out in my mind i'll make a start

kewl, jason... i like those kind of projects where you have to figure out how parts fit and move... especially for vehicles...
did these a while ago for a cyborg...

Re: July MMC: Robotic limbs
Nice! with this topic and those pics from your link im enjoying more and more the thought of using the minimalistic exoskeleton aproach so you can see the workings of the main "skeletal" structure...
I will have to be carefull though.. the models will be aimed for use in an MMOFPS. But taking liberties with protoypte models will be a given hehe!
I wont start work on this for a long time unless i get bored of environment modelling though.. My current project is aimed at being a MMORPG, im currently building 1 large terrain, all the scenery and a few monsters + male and female player characters AND fully animating them all by myself.. and thats just for the demo!
...Oh yes im building the engine myself around the Ogre3D rendering engine.. just a few little bites on my plate hehe!
The engine will be re-useable though, so once i have it made and done i can start work on the Cyborg project (i even have the full storyline worked out for this) while i try and assemble a team to help me complete the RPG lol

Re: July MMC: Robotic limbs
game design is fun, but very time consuming, especially if you don't have a large dedicated team...
I've been involved in a few, but they all died along the way when people lost interest...

Re: July MMC: Robotic limbs
Hah.. yes ive seen many die
But mine shall not! Why? Because its something i will complete even if i have to do everything myself!
The RPG conversion from 2D to 3D is something i have personally wanted to do for a long time, and its also something the community from the old game have thought about but nobody ever really made a start on anything.. until now
And the Cyborg project is my own little brain-baby that i would regret until the day i died if i never even attempt to make it!
So in theory.. once i am in a position to ask for help with a good solid demo i should be a fairly ideal teamleader for anyone who joins me. At the point of asking i will have good knowleadge of every part of the design process, plus the drive to get things done.
And of course the fact i dont want to be a barman or carpenter for the rest of my life
!

You can work all your life on a project. The hand of the robot in my movie B.O.T. is made in 3d with the blueprint of another project made 30 years ago:

Re: July MMC: Robotic limbs
Oooo nice Marcel, i like the use of springs and elastic where its needed to draw the parts back into "relaxed" poses, such as opening the fingers, straightening the wrist etc. Thats really cool!
.. is my observation correct? sorry if i'm wrong!
Still like the idea even if i did get it wrong lol..

Jason: If I could do a whole game project on my own, I would, but I can only do the graphics. Perhaps if there was a great and easy game engine package I can use that I can easily slot my graphics into, I'd go for it... got TONS of ideas for games...
marcel: you're always an inspiration when you show your robot designs, I must train myself to spend more time on a model and not get impatient too quickly. I always tend to find the easiest way of doing models with the least amount of effort, but I guess that is a good thing for game design because then you tend to be minimalistic with very simple objects which you need for game models and game performance...

Re: July MMC: Robotic limbs
Well when i have my engine up and running for my first protoype and everything is running smoothly, i might just have to hook you up with it!theuns wrote:Jason: If I could do a whole game project on my own, I would, but I can only do the graphics. I fully intend to use entirely open source components to build it, and also intend to release it as an open source project once its complete. I will also try to only use scene editors that are compatible with every relevant aspect of the engine, which would allow people to work with content as easily as possible
I will document everything in a manner that everyone should be able to understand and start using the engine (well.. so long as they speak english

Re: July MMC: Robotic limbs
sounds like a great idea Jason, and very ambitious but I'll be the first in line to try it out and try and let my creative treasures see the light of day for all to enjoy !!!
