Looking forward to the brass rails and highly polished wood accents.
Not really steampunkish (or is it?) here is some inspiration for you.

Composition is not decided - some sort of dramatic lighting setup. I get inspired by spacekdet's link below. I really like the old space illustration style.

Re: steam punk-ish space ship
An update:
I've been working on the rear fuselage, observation tower and nacelle.
I've taken some detours to do modeling practice and develop background scenery.
So work on this slowed. After I finish modeling and basic texturing I plan to light it, then experiment with color scheme. I imagine I'll want some painted markings and maybe stripes. I can evaluate different hues on the components rather than shades of gray. I'm glad I don't have a deadline.

How about more than a picture of a close-up side view. I'd love the see the whole ship, unfinished as it may be

Now that is one cool spaceship with some awesome textures! And the realtime lighting you got there is funky too! Keep up the good work and finish it soon!! (lol, well without any pressure! )

Great space vehicle, thanks for the top view! It looks great for a transport of some sort that never enters atmosphere. Those two pods on the side, are they docking bays like on the Battlestar Galactica?

I imagine the side ports near the front are either escape pods or little shuttles for planet landings. I imagine the docking port is the circular region on the top, font section.
Strangely, the front of the thing makes me think of a sloth.

Awesomely cool work. Did you do that all with TS workspace Peter? I knew that TS is pretty awesome but always was under the impression it was mostly for low poly work. Keep up the nice work BNG.

Haha, spaceships tend to do that. I made a spaceship years ago that I nicknamed Sloth. Only yesterday I was working on a little upgrade of that ship: vi ... f=5&t=2929Peter wrote:Strangely, the front of the thing makes me think of a sloth.

As a kid I worked a lot with clay and I built a lot of Lego, I do have some models though. I have an A6M5 Zero, Spitfire, Hurricane and a BA Harrier. I've even done some papercraft modeling, I built Tali from Mass Effect 2 a couple of months ago, that's also a pretty unique way of building models.

Re: steam punk-ish space ship
I finished modeling. Here is a test render in a scene I plan to do.
I have some touch up on some of the topology of the ship model, but this is it.
I think I should make the planet look more real. what do you think?

The closest planet looks blurred but not the distant planet which is further away. I like the ship and all the colors in the scene.

Re: steam punk-ish space ship
I changed the clouds to make the planet more realistic.
I duplicated the moon, scaled it up slightly, and made it nearly transparent. This blurred the moon.
Is this improved? Lighting:
I'm having trouble lighting both the ship and the background the way I want with the same light rig.
I'll probably do two separate renders and composite ship with background.

Re: steam punk-ish space ship
Wow, it is looking good.
Are you rendering on the WS side off Ts?
I just did some experiments in blender from tS workspace side today. I rendered two passess, one a depth pass with a depth shader and the other as a beauty pass.
Then using an invert and a defocus node in the composite mode in blender, I used the depth shader pass from tS to define the defocus threshold, creating a depth of field from TS workspace side.
Then you can suttly blur everything out but the ship, just a little if you want.
I think with the composite you can also render off a constant shader for the planets, and another for the shuttle to then get two different key masks you could also use in Blender composite to then color balance the individual pieces.
Instead of relighting everything......
If you need help with what little I know of blender just toot! =)

Looks like it belongs in an anime. Just a simple anim of it moving past would look great too....

Thanks for the nice comments everyone!

I always render in the Workspace.
I'm having trouble with the scene light rendering the ship weirdly (e.g.: the black region near the turret, streaking on the nacelles). I'm still looking into it.
Depth blur:
I wish I could do it in the workspace. I'm not sure yet if I want to invest the time.
Jimmer -
It's sure as heck going to be animated!

Re: steam punk-ish space ship
I solved the ship's lighting problem. I moved it forward - out of the influence of the light for the planets. I gave it a spot light near by. This doesn't illuminate the planets - just the ship.
I could then tweak the spot to improve the ship rendering.
When I moved the ship forward I moved the camera with it. I then had to enlarge the blue planet. That gave it more foreground shadow and now it looks more curved, so I like that.
The blue planet's haze needs some fixing.
Here is a snapshot. Next, on to animation.

MUUUUUUUCH better. =)
How did you get the haze on the blue planet? Is it a shader or are you using the post process bloom and glow?
Looks fantastic!
