www.caligari.us - Caligari Website recovery project

Post by John3D »

Hello fellows,
I'm an old, since truespace I, nostalgic user. When I realize Caligari website was not there anymore I felt something very important of my past was desapearing, something that in psychiatry is called "clinging to the past", or something like that, so I decided to try to recover and reassemble what was left of the original site in archive.org. There is much to recover yet, but here is the project status:

 http://www.caligari.us"

I'm hearing suggestions
Best Regards,
John

THIS IS GREAT! KEEP IT UP! Free software for people around here in SA is more than welcome! And something that is easy to use is a great teaching tool! Love it! Let me test all the links and stuff, later.

You are one Frankenstein doctor genius. :worship:

Don´t want to play the party pooper, but what you did could be a bit dangerous. trueSpace is still property of Microsoft, even when it`s abandoned and not longer available. I hope i am wrong, and fingers crossed that nobody wants to sue you here :)

I applause both the hard work to put together all these pages, and the idea of reviving the Caligari site !
Bravo John3d !
TrueSpace has been given for free by Microsoft, and abandoned. This forum demonstrates that the community of users is still significant though, and our favorite software deserves a fan site.

Although I love the idea of a backup of historical Caligari site, I see two issues :
- As a backup site, I have a strange unconfortable feeling. Visiting this "frozen" site makes me feel like in a wax museum (I won't say a cemetery).
- As Tiles said, Microsoft still owns the rights over trueSpace. So, even if I doubt they will notice this fan site, that is a risky initiative.

This is a start in the resurection process of trueSpace though.
When Prodigy created united3dartists.com, the idea was to keep a place for the very friendly community of trueSpace users, and to compare the softwares we were supposed to move into, after the death of trueSpace.
But the fact, 3 years later, is that we are STILL using trueSpace !

So I think we could build a new website, with the color line/style of the original Caligari's site that would immediatly identify the purpose/nature of the site, and make us feel at home, but with an original content.
That new site, using the original graphic chart, but with no mention of Caligari Corporation, would become the "official" trueSpace community website. A unique gate to access this forum as a link, and links to all the tutorials and plugins we collected along the years, plus links to other ressources such as external renderers, etc...
We could name it http://www.truespace-community.com.." .

What do you think ?

The biggest legal issues are likely the use of the brand art work which MS would own the copyright to for the next 50+ years. Using the caligari name in the url is a bit dodgy but the name would likely have been de-registered with the MS acquisition ... especially given you are not deriving revenue from the name.

The biggest headache I see would be all the of the images and file attachments in the forum. I don't know anyone that downloaded those except as piecework directly from each forum topic.

Good luck... it is an ambitious project.

Caligari is a town, not the property of Ms. Maybe with Caligari.us you will have no problem of copyright.

trueSpace is a software. And under the property of Microsoft. They owned it. The webdesign of the Caligari Page is, or better was, part of Caligari Corporation, which was by the way never owned by Microsoft. It`s a independend company. That makes two possible license holder with lots of trouble potential :)

I think just changing the logo a little, or making a spoof logo and spoof name for truespace/caligari might avoid potential problems, or a watermark or disclaimer to the website.
Maybe just having it for a faux website for a faux product, like knockoff products would be ok.... but the download can still be there, since they left it for free. Oreo = Recreo.

After so long, I am sure it will be annoying to dig up graves and go into legal battles for something bankrupt..

I think its ok. Its nice to have it.

Thanks for the effort.

Bookmarked, but you should know that the archives don't have everything that the original Caligari site had, specifically the forums and the downloads, so you would have to find another source for those. I remember seeing a post somewhere around here from someone who said they had a bunch of stuff from the Caligari site. Maybe you can contact him to fill in some of the gaps that the wayback machine missed.

I see your point, but I hardly think that Microsoft would spend a dime to sue a private individual for such a project. Good luck with the project and I'll add the site to my favs. Leroy.

Given the success of Windows 8 they might need the income.... :bananamad:

It would be nice if you guys did the monthly contests there like their used to be.
And tutorials...
Also you need to link forum tab to this forum.

Like someone said. I appreciate the effort, however I feel like I'm in a wax museum or something... Where nothing can be accessed of touched.

There is a contest: the United 3D Artists Graphic Arts Challenge. There are some tutorials here too.

Yea, I know.
Well, when I posted it about it I didn't exactly know how the contests worked. But, then again, contest was based on Caligari software only, and now most of us use truespace 15% of the time and the rest blender, hex etc.
---Then again it would be a what we down now sort of deal, without caligari.(or any future unofficial updates, you know if hell froze over :bananadevil: !! :D)

But I was saying put some of the tutorials some of us have made or have from the golden days. You know just for effect, because it's just like a ghost website right now (understandably).

Make the the links actually do something instead of just being empty pictures.

I visited the remade site not long ago, really nice. But.. the downloads page has some horrible font sizes that make it nearly impossible to find the download link... just thought to post.

It looks good in Chrome but bad in Firefox and IE. Firefox says the link to the style page is bad.
