3D World Issue 119

Post by splinters »

Again, a good issue and the final push I needed to cancel my subscription to 3D Artist. Lots of content, good artwork and making it three in a row; letter of the month is an 'obiturary' regarding tS from none other than Tom Grimes. The makes me, Paul Boland (long time but ex-tS user) and Tom. Hell, if tS had this sort of coverage when it was still going sales might have been much better!
As I said, plenty of good content and a major feature on Transformers 2 and ILM (following last months Pixar feature) remind me why this will remain a better mag than 3D artist.

Still, you could always get both!

Nothing but I just saved a few quid on the 3D Artist subscription.

To be honest, if you are in the UK and you see either on the newstand, then it is a no brainer to pick them both up. I just post the 'reviews' for the benefit of anyone wanting to import them at much greater cost.

To me, 3D artist is a good mag but no really good cover CD software and similare articles to 3D World mean I am just sticking with the one. I can always take a look in the newsagents and decide on particular issues!

I see they already raised their prices on a subscription to 3DArtist Magazine for a year in the U.S.
The magazine is excellent for inspiration, layout, quality and tutorials. I couldn't be happier. The software on the CD/DVD was always secondary for me. In my opinion 3DArtist is much nicer and I'll pickup the other based on your reviews.

I agree Steinie and 3D artist has so much more art and tutorials. They just don't seem to nail the 'big' features though. 3D World has had exclusive Pixar covers and an interview with Pixar followed by ILM; two of my all time heros of the CGI/Effects genre.

I am just trying to reduce my magazines which currently number at least 4 every month....I hardly get the time to read them some months and have sealed copies of other mags... :(

Maybe when there is some exclusive or decent software, I will pick 3D Artist up again.

Either way, these posts are about content, not my opinion regarding which mag is best so I will leave it at that.

I've been following both here in the states. I stopped buying 3D World for quite awhile. It seemed that they seemed to re-hash the same sort of things over and over. I did pick up a recent issue (118 I think...if you buy them on the news stand here they are about a month old its seems) and was pleasantly surprised.

I don't subscribe to either one as (to no fault of the publishers) some issues don't have much of interest for me. None-the-less, I still look forward to the new issues showing up every month. Our local book/magazine store carries HDRI and CineFX too which are worth a look through as well.
