sketch up pro

Post by DarkScythe »

does anyone here have or own sketch up pro... if so I have a question

1. does the sketch up pro .obj exporter can export quad.... the free version export it to triangle... even the collada exporter that comes with it ( there is a setting there to choose to export to triangle so I dont click it but still it turn it to triangle it is also a messy collada export it separate each face to individual.)

2. I want to export it to quad any pointers or idea or know how... sketch up to ts workspace

3. TS export also clintonman and froo export and import turn it to triangle I am looking for a work flow of import to export to TS workspace to sketch up of quad mesh.... any pointers are welcome. ( clintonman exporter have settings to quads but still turn it to triangle any sketch up .obj export even blender .obj)

advance thanks to those who will answer :worship:

Dunno about now, but you could download the Pro trial and it last for 8 hours.

Which is quite considerable if you design what you want in the free version and open it up in the Pro version.

As I recall, triangulation is part and parcel for Sketchup Pro. Don't think it ever got away from doing that.

Why is quads so important ?
The things that you make with Sketchup are not going to be rigged in the first place
and the meshes that Sketchup pro exports are very good and no problem at all.
Only if you rig you will need some smooth bends....
All render engines make tris out of quads.. so whats the point...

I going to rig it, uv map animate it and also render it... sketch up doesn't have those built inside it....
material in sketch up is no good. I use sketch up for modeling I like it's precision modeling I will use sketch up as my primary modeling tool and use blender for animation and others or use TS Worskpace for realtime render.

the only bothering me is the export of sketch up it turn quad face to triangle, in blender there is "tris to quad" but it is not precise it mess up the quads original topology. the best way is manually dissolve to create a quad but I want to speed up the process.

when you try to put sds to the triangulated model is a mess lots of crease. here's what I did with sketch up and TS workspace vi ... 0&start=10 I manually convert triangle to quads in this model.

quad is good topology.... triangle destroy topology

Since I use sketchup only for what its strong for (architecture and props)and not for organic I never had problems.
For architecture and props the topology is very good....
sketchup does not have normal tris it has divided quads....
For organic i use a good polygon modeler.... horses for courses...

thanks for all who reply I finally found some way out... the purpose is to make sketch up my primary modeling tool, organic or non organic... there's no escape in triangulate but it will minimize the work, the flow is

1. use sketch up for modeling then export it as an .obj (it will be triangulate)
2. dissolve the triangle in blender but if your lazy there's a quicker step to remove triangle ( tris to quad = alt+j ) but not precise you have to fix the topology to its original state. from here you can now texture, animate it.
once the models are quads export it as .obj
3. import it in TS Workspace using clintonman fbx import ( it is also import .obj ) then once imported it will be quads the faces will be separate pieces so you have to "heal vertices" if so many points are too closed used 0.001 settings.

Before I couldn't work with workspace and blender once I finished modeling in sketch up I have to decide, blender or TS Workspace texturing now I can use both. before I clean the triangle in TS workspace and texture it but when I export it to blender it goes back to triangle so clean up again too much work and time consuming. so the set up is sketch up then blender then TS workspace.

I hope it can be useful to everybody.

Grab yourself Thom Thom's CleanUp Tool for SU it work's with Pro and the free Sketchup, it wont cure your problem but it will clean up the geometry a lot better:
http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtop ... ilit=purge"

There's a Direct X exporter for 3D Rad that works quite well in Sketchup, textures are usually exported ok

I export from SU to C4D with FBX

Already have it use it all the time.

does the direct x exporter export to quad, actually I don't have problem of exporting... triangle output is the problem

nice to see c4d user I have used it only trial version... I like C4d just don't have money for it.....does Su export to fbx export to quads?
