Truespace 7.6: Understanding Workspace/ Modeling Modes

Post by chromedragon »

Hello, I recently downloaded Truespace 7.6. This is the version that includes Truespace 6. My question is, when I move to the modeling mode, am I using version 6 or still 7.6 in modeling mode? Second, it seems the modeling mode has more buttons (functions) than the workspace mode. Am I missing something?

Hi Chromedragon,

TS 7.X is two programs in one. The workspace is an unfinished new style of TS. Model side is TS 6.6 plus some new things like HDRI lighting. The bridge links them.

Model side has more buttons because it is more complete while workspace is unfinished and so has less. Please note that TS is no longer being developed so, other than the valiant efforts of some forum members, it won't advance beyond some limit.

You can use model side without going to workspace at all. If you want that then turn the bridge off. Some, like Steinie, mostly use workspace. Many, like me, will migrate to other programs (Blender etc.) and use TS while we can and prefer it for something.

So is the polygon line function only in the Model part. I can't see it in the Workspace part. I suppose it might be best to do a design in the Model part then play with it more in the Work Space part?

I suppose it is only really complicated animations that might have trouble crossing the bridege? What should be avoided in order not to have any problems crossing the bridge?

Rule #1 :
Consider Modeler and Workspace as two different applications : save your native Modeler scenes/objects as scn/cob files, and the native Workspace items in their respective format.
Rule #2 :
Always keep Bridge off, unless you want to do a conversion.

This should help you to keep safe backups in case a model goes wrong after several Bridge switches.

Polyline is Model side, the equivalent in Workspace would be the 'Add Curve' tools.
Will only need an extra step to convert to polygon when you are done.

(UPDATE) My mistake, I thought NURBS curves were on both sides. Model side only.
Shows how much I use Workspace.

Other things to watch out for on the bridge:

Decide first on which side you are going to surface/texture your model/scene.
Model first, switching between Model/Workspace as needed.
Texture last, as the bridge has a built-in troll that eats textures!

Don't even think about animation crossing the bridge. There is a different bone system on both sides and each will not work on the other side.

Unlike others here my bridge is on all the time. I just model with whatever tools I need first. The extrusion, lathe tools, tons of after market plug ins, Nurbs are all on the Modeler side. Since I like organic modeling, the tools on the workSpace side are much more stable and robust like the softpaint, boolean, and sds tools.

So many users here work on the Modeler side and never cross the bridge. I tend to use Modeler sparingly and only if there is a modeling tool I need. I'll cross the bridge to finish modeling, apply textures, add bones and animate.
