A New User with Questions

Post by Baalizar »

Hello True Spacers,

The only time I played with this program was they gave the first incarnation for free. At the time I was going to school to understand Autocad, and played for a while, then burned it into a disk.\

But it is free right now, and you all got bums like me playing with this program.\

While incredibly buggy, this is an amazing 3d design program, and I am happy I have lived long enough to check it out.

I have some really stupid questions.

How do you create groups, and then name them? The "glue as sibling" option is just too final.

Other Newbies should know that the undo function only applies to latest command, and once it moves on, then the undo function greys out.

Is that right?!

If I create a deformation object, then how do I get out of the that mode?

If I create a subdivision in the Work Place, and then I go into the modeler, then the modeler doesnt recognize it as a subdivision and I can edit it. If I create a create a subdivision on the modeler side, I cannot edit the mesh until I convert it into something else with a right click on the button. Is this normal?

I know this is many stupid things to ask, but I have much more things to ask.

I hope I do not offend, but this program is like a love-hate thing. Sometimes its functions are amazing, and sometimes the most basic stuff is incredibly complicated. I have Uninstalled it and reinstalled over 3 times in the last 3 weeks. At this moment I love this True 'Space, but tommmorow I will probaly hate it again.

But then, should I repeat the word ......free.....\

thank you,

Willy

To create groups:
Hold Control key and click on desired objects.
When all are selected, in Model: click 'Glue As Sib or child'. It's not as 'final' as you think- the next time you select the glued object, you just press the down arrow (then right or left arrow key) key to dive into the hierarchy of the glued object. There's always the 'unglue' tool.
In Workspace, 'Glue As' is now called 'Encapsulate'.
What the real difference between plain 'Encapsulate' and 'Encapsulate in 3D' is, I'm not sure... I usually just use the 'in 3D' option. There should also be an 'Unencapsulate' pair of icons... unless those were extras that I picked up along the way.

Undo. Sigh. Be deliberate... and hover over Control z.
It's said to have a longer memory in Workspace. It's also context sensitive...if you switch objects or modes you may have to re-select them to undo something. In Model, yes it's true...you have one shot at undo.

To exit deform mode (or an other 'edit' type mode) , press the Object tool (cursor) icon.
To stop the deformation mode, there's the aptly named 'Stop Deforming By Standalone Deformation Object' icon.

Re: the subdivision question. I'm unclear what you're asking. Sounds like the bridge is off... but I would suggest sticking to one side or the other when subdivision modeling- trying to mix and match between the two sides can only bring heartbreak and havoc into your life and who needs that?
For editing, you just right-click the object. If it's already been subdivided, it should kick you right into the SDS toolset/ sds edit mode. To edit it again with the normal poly editing toolset, yes, you'll have to 'Extract Control mesh from subdivided Object'. Then the full polygon edition toolset will be available for use on the object again. Always good to do this on a copy of the object 'just in case'.
Object Libraries are great for this.

I've also thought that tS7 'made the hard things easy and the easy things hard'...so it's not just you.
Love/Hate sums it up nicely.

Thank you so much, for responding.
Yes, I have right clicked and controlled a group, but I dont know how to acess the higher archy. And then name all the parts of the group. I have pressed enter, but that doesnt always work.
As far as subdivisons go, I have learned that if I create a subdivsion in the work place., and I open up the modeler, then the modeler side does not recoginze it as a subdivision and I can point edit it like any other mesh. If I try to edit it in the model mode. then I cannot edit it until I convert it into a polygonal mesh (mess).

Damn, I love this program

I just want to post that in order to get out of subdivision mode in the model side you have to right click the tool button and then call up the menu...then click on the yellow (left) button to turn the SD into a regular polygon. If you are trying to create a skeleton, then you must turn it into a polygon before you attach the skeleton to a skin...If you attach a skeleton to a skin and then subdivide the mesh, then it will seperate from the skeleton.!
