Landscape

Post by Wigand »

My wife asked me to make a picture for one of her books.
So I need a landscape from montana. Mountains and horses you know ;)

First I tried to change a picture out of a book, but we are unsure because of the copyright.
Next step was to try terragen3. But it is so difficult especially the import and export functions.

If you have some good suggestions, please let me know.

Bryce and Vue a both really easy and good to use for those things. If you want you can export those meshes you procedurally generate to other software you are comfortable with, or do some compositing in Blender/Nuke/Photoshop or something.

Thank you Draise.
Is it possible to import TS objects into Bryce or Vue?
Are there (full) test versions of these programs, because I need this picture very soon?

Yes, you can import OBJ's from TS into those softwares nicely, though the textures may not be preserved.

You also can export some terrain files into TS if you want to, even plants - albiet heavy models that may need new textures.

Vue Pioneerhas a great demo package, almost fully featured, with limited render sizes - logo - can't import files, but it's good, love using it. Bryce you can get, I think for kinda cheap.. maybe Bryce 6 will be free.

Bryce Pro 7 is only $20 http://www.daz3d.com/bryce-7-pro/ it can import TS cob and scene files as well as many other formats. Bryce trees have straighter trunks than I would like. You can make non-tree looking plants by changing the tree generator settings but Vue seems better for plants and generally more powerful.

You could try the stock photo websites. You can probably buy rights to some images fairly cheap there though a license for bazillion copy printing/publishing use, like a book, isn't the cheapest.

Anyone live in a Montana-like place? Snap some photos for Wigand?

All depends what you want to spend and if you want to use the application for later projects too !
Vue is perfect for what you want to do and it works very well with TS !
The eco system module is cool for making tons of plants and trees inside your scene with avery low footprint and
use of computer resources...
Its quite more photorealistic then Bryce !

Thank you.

Do I need to buy special plugins for plants in these programs?
Or are there already plants?

Thanks Spacekdet! That will be useful! The PLE can export models. Unfortunately, upgrading to the full versions is very expensive. Don't confuse this product with the old "Plant Studio" program not associated with the makers of Vue.

You dont need to invest that much money for what you want to do !
Vue esprit with the botanica module and ecosystem ( around 300 $) does the job perfectly well and there are tons of tree types
that you can use from other applications and also from cornucopia..... there are quite a few already part of botanica as far as I know...
Vue esprit is 199 $ and vue studio is 399 $ and complete is 599 $......
Thats around the price what Truespace used to cost or even less... !
You get Hollywood blockbuster qualitylevel for that money since the software is used in very many of the movies including
Avatar......

dont get your last comment Marcel ???
He already said what he wants to do with it......and it excactly fits into the needs that he has....
its also not priced anywhere near where ie Maya etc. or Max are...
The only real other software is Bryce and its much more painterly and less realisticly looking...
thats what he isnt after....
Yes he could also use Maxwell or Thea or Kerkythea... they all have instancing.....but they all have no tree options
and arent realy made for landscaping....

I think Marcel meant "job" over "work". Example: Now to find a job to buy the software - the hard part - catch 42. ;) :bananacheers:

Thanks all for trying to help me.
I stopped this project, because I needed to much time. I tried Terragen, but
it was to difficult, you can import objects, but you only see object-boxes until you render.
Next problem was the render resolution. I found it to low. And tweaking all the
buttons and sliders are a never ending story.
My wife made her own picture by combining some fotos.
And she said, that this would be good enough.
