Re: Natal.
Interesting....we'll see when the "WOW" particles settle...in the end it is still just functions() getting input and sending output.....with that being said. I find it to be a breath of fresh air, and very "Neato!"

Re: Natal.
Hi Prodigy,
I learned about Natal yesterday. Exciting stuff! The press is really eating it up and saying it is orders of magnitude better than Wii. Also, it works with existing XBox 360 consoles which is also amazing.
But I can't imagine that it can maintain precision at high speed. Notice how slowly the lady gestured and you could still see what appeared to be video lag as it responded. The Natal system and the XBox must be doing some heavy duty number crunching.
Plus, Natal is reported to handle multiple users simultaneously. For example, you can have multiple people in the room---all playing a game---and it is supposed to be able to recognize who is who and track each persons gestures separately.
It will be interesting to see when it comes to market and how well it really works outside of the demo room. Just think, a really good gesture recognition system may be here and it works with just a camera---nothing to hold in your hand, no gloves or head cams, and no sensors to attach to your body. Amazing!!!
Best regards, First Light

Interesting interactive capabilities, but it is a bit creepy. For one thing to interact with a "character" on a server on the internet, you'd have to send video and audio of yourself and your living space to the other server, which means that it is being recorded. I'm sure hackers wouldn't have any trouble intercepting that stream or spoofing the interface to spy on people. You'd have to make sure that your console was set up in a "public safe" room of your house and that everyone knew that if they went in that room that it was a "public place".

Re: Natal.
There are other issues. With most of the countries around the world moving toward socialism/fascism, where the rights of the collective out way the rights of the individual. This kind of tool might be used by the government to monitor people's "mental health". If it reads your "emotions" from your facial expression, would Microsoft be required report people to the State that show signs of "instability"? Or are over stressed, and thus a "risk to the community"? What about people who have opinions that the State deems "hate thought" or not politically correct. Do you get sent to re-education camps?
Maybe they'll have it ask you questions and see how you respond "emotionally". Are you lying with your answers?
It doesn't even have to be government either, marketing companies can pay to have the software ask targeted questions then read your facial response in order to target advertising to you.
Considering the way everything we do is recorded these days, it's probably not something we can avoid, but privacy rights are officially a thing of the past.

Re: Natal.
I hope the way of futur generations will not be Matrix, Skynet or minority report. I have not gmail, facebook or other Spy. I have not a mobil phone and gps. People find it strange for a person who like computer. Maybe being free has become strange. No addiction, no control. It is the next battle of this century. The current crisis is a small warning. Addiction causes bad consumption and control reduced freedoms. The danger is that the technology is fascinating even if it is misused. I hope future generations will be smarter than us and will not be blinded by all this. I remain optimistic.

Re: Natal.
I had a dream:
I lost my credit card, my money, the keys to my house. my car no longer works. The bus was not opening up the door. I arrived home, the alarm sounded and the police stopped me. The scan was negative and they put me in jail. when I awoke, I was reassured: the chip in my brain was not broken!

Re: Natal.
Wow, I can't wait until Microsoft release the "Make Kid Do Homework" game. I nearly wet my pants with excitement.
"Hey kid, do you have a rocket launcher"
"No"
"Then do your home.....nah eat my uzi instead"
(Then I take it back to eb for a refund).
I also love the sales pitch about how MS are so way smarter than those science-fiction writers. That guy should read Count Zero (or was it the next one?), that actually has a cool virtual kid in it. It was also written over twenty years ago.
I'm sorry, but I'm putting this one in my wank of the week basket. MS are always coming out with these "welcome to the future" vidoes. I would settle for an xbox that isn't in imminent danger of becoming a paper-weight........

Re: Natal.
Thats the big project that the people at Google and Nasa are also working on !
Artificial intelligence.
A search engine that from talking with you can find out what you are looking for.
Believe me Truespaces structure had the basic design of artificial intelligence built into it.
Its the 1d 2d 3d aspect that mimics the linking in the human brain.....
Heres the links to the pressreleases of Google and Nasa and the Singularity ....

This is definitely true! A person's native language has a profound affect on the way their brain develops.
Years ago I studied speech intelligility and helped design one of the first acoustical modelling programs that accurately predicted it. One of the surprises was that most "western" languages require the listener to hear consonants for intellligibility whereas most "eastern" languages require the listener to hear vowels for intelligibility. The speech center of the brain was affected in a profound way.
I think we can draw similar generational inferences regarding exposure and heavy use of computers at an early age. For example, first-person shooter games may develop fast-twitch abilities that were uncommon to prior generations. This could offer huge advantages to certain professions. On the other hand, a complimentary short attention span could be harmful for other professions.

Re: Natal.
Hawaiian's must have really different brain development. They have innumerable vowels.
I had fun with Alta Vista's Babel Fish translator. Translate some text from English to Italian or French and the translate what it gives you back to English. It is usually funny. Especially if the English text contained "rubber ducky".

Re: Natal.
do you know than more 50 percent of the english words are from the old french? But the grammar is different and with the same bricks we do something different. i don't understand how you do to speak with a person that you don't know without the "tu" and the "vous" in french to define if you like or respect a person only by the choose of one of these . Arab have singular, plural and duo witch is a thing difficult to understand. The language is also influenced by the gestural and the tone. The intelligence used to decrypt it without any knowledge.Hi marcel,

Re: Natal.
i can use "tu" as "you"Finis wrote:Tell more about tu and vous please.
i can use "vous " as "you" or "we"
"tu" is for your family, your friend and people you know well. it also used to speak to children.
"tu" can be negative to show you don't respect an adult.
"vous" is the same use as "we"
"vous" can be used to speak to only one person (as "tu") but with respect, or if you don't know it.
"vous" can be negative if you want to show that you don't like a person and you don't want to become his friend (you use 'tu" with a friend).
in resume, you can use "tu" and "vous" to speak to one person. Both can be positive or negative. It depend of the contest. that is the subtlety.
When you speak to more one person, it is always "vous".

Thanks Marcel.
So tu and vous are kind of like du and Sie in German. Not exactly though.

Re: Natal.
Yes... that is pretty much it.
It is my understanding that addressing people of distinction in the plural is a courtesy from the feudal era when kings and queens were addressed as the "royal we". The king was never a person but the nation therefore addressing the king meant you were speaking to the nation. The courtiers then took on the same airs as they represented the people on the land they owned.
The singular and plural form of "you" in the English language was dropped a long time ago owing to the amount of alcohol we consume and the obvious problems at the bar when "last call" comes around and the obligatory "I love you MAAAAAAAN!" stuff starts.

What about the Irish?
Or the Russians?

Re: Natal.
I am Irish and we don't do the "I love you man" stuff... we recite poetry and go home to sleep. The Welsh engage in their world famous close harmony singing and the Russians I know drink themselves to sleep.
Sadly I do not speak Gaelic, Welsh or Russian so I cannot comment on the use of plural addressing in those languages.
