Plan to Revive FrooServe

Post by froo »

I'd like to get FrooServe revived again.
We had to do a local move to our new house, and get a wireless router.
Trouble is, the FrooServe host is now downstairs, and can't get reception from
the wireless router. It did before, but it really sucked. Even my wife's computer
had poor reception, and it's right down the hall. The home was built in the 1980s
I believe, and I suspect the wall is fairly 'dense', causing interference. The setup
looks sort of like this:

Router
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wall Wall Wall Wall Wall Wall Wall Wall Wall Wall Wall Wall Wall Wall Wall Wall
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Computer

So the signal is bouncing all over the place, and the direct line to the computer
is basically being absorbed/reflected/refracted by the wall. Interestingly enough, the
laptop works just fine downstairs. Maybe it's the antennas I bought that don't work so well.

Maybe that doesn't matter. In any event, I got tired of the timeout b.s. and just ran
a cat5 LAN cable directly from the router to the computer. Works great now! Looks good
too. I ran the cable so it is hidden. If it were white in color, it'd be even more transparent,
but it's blue instead. Meh.

So I told the homeowner I'd like to run some network cable downstairs, along with coax (for cable TV).
He's a contractor - he works on high end houses, doing this type of thing for a living. He's also
a big fan of estate sales and garage sales. So he got a spool of LAN cable with about 350 ft. on it,
for $17. BOOYAH!

The long and short of this is, once we get the wired connections going, I plan to start FrooServe again.
I couldn't do it with this wireless P.O.S. connection. I'll letcha know when it gets setup.

We have not been able to run the LAN cable downstairs yet.
Sorry I have not updated this thread.

Hey cool, a server! How does that work? I've never had a collab 3D environment before!!.. Is this for a shared 3D space with TS? Or does this have another function?

Draise, it's a very cool idea. We had gotten into this a while back. Froo, and some others, were enhancing the capabilities. When Microsoft bought tS, the biggest rumor was this was the reason they did it for. Don't know, but I thought it was the closest most of us got to actualizing VR for every day use.
Hey Froo... Last I remember we were having drinks poolside on some tall bridge; jokes running freely :)

Another cool feature is the fact that two or more people can model at the same time on the same model in shared space.

Hahahaha Dragneye! :bananacheers:
I like that feature too Steinie.
Yeah Draise, it is a 3d Collaboration environment.
It's not perfect of course but it's fun.
Caligari used to host a Thursday night event called TNL!
(Thursday Night Live!). One of the highlights of that event
was a modelling competition: two competitors would create
a model in record time while those gathered watched.
That was pretty cool!

Stan and trueBlue both had servers up and running at one
point; not sure if they have the opportunity to revive theirs
or not.

Ok so hopefully this weekend we will replace the lights downstairs (the cursed low hanging chandeliers); I think the original homeowners were elves; these things hang down so they are about 5 feet above the ground. I stand over 6 feet so, it kinda sucks.

Then we can run the LAN cable downstairs where my 'FrooServe' computer is located. Unfortunately I lost the domain name: FrooSpace or FrooServe or whatever the hell it was so I will have to come up with something else. I suspect we will have to run it up to the attic, then down through the wall. We'll see what the homeowner says; he does this for a living.
Then, I can start the server again. That is, if it's interesting to folks. It's a pretty nifty thing.

mmmm I dunno... froo-froo sounds like the name of a very spoiled miniature poodle or something. Not that there's anything WRONG with that. Just not too cool a name for a server... heh ... Froo froo.

I am going to see if I can get an omnidirectional booster antenna for the wireless router tonight; see if that makes a difference. I'm kinda tired of waiting on running that dang LAN cable so, $9.99 isn't too bad. Worth a shot at least. I don't know what kind of success I can expect with trueServe using a wireless connection though; guess we'll find out!

When I bought the router it was an 'emergency' type situation. We just moved to this new house, my old router did not work; it was a rev-G model from 5 years before. Had to get a rev-N router, not knowing anything about wireless connectivity. Gah!

Just spoke with the homeowner. I asked if we could run the LAN cable before replacing the low hanging lights downstairs, since the lack of net access is preventing me from participating in some online projects. He said we could do that. So hopefully we can get this done this weekend. I can use the laptop but it's sitting on a desk I've had since I was like, 12 years old or something. It's a nice desk, but a little too small for staying there for extended periods of time. The other computer is on a very large desk, with dual monitors, so I have plenty of space and leg room. Yeah I could use the laptop there but why not use both?

well I may not be able to get this to work after all.
I cannot seem to get the computer (XP machine) an IP address from the router. I have no idea what is going on.
The cable is fine; I tested it on the laptop. So I do not know what's going on. I should be getting an ip address from the router. Maybe this would require a full windows reinstall, since that XP computer has been moved around, its used wireless and wired networking, etc. I dunno. It may be better (as Marcel has said before) to keep that computer 'off the net' and use it for 3d exclusively. I guess I need to use a thumb drive to transfer stuff then. F*CK. Oh well.

bummer ...... at a guess ,,, you might have to manually give your network card on the machine a ip address to use , currently I am guessing that the router is dishing it one from its dhcp server and for some reason the adapter doesnt quite get it so would need to be configured to be able to be seen on the network.

I think I had issues with win98 and a similar problem , but as far as I remember xp never caused this issue with me in the past.

maybe some windows network guru on the forums could pipe in with more accurate decription than i can give.

Well this morning it works. Heh.
I rebooted, and the LAN connection is hot. We'll see if it lasts.
I did try manually assigning an ip address yesterday, with no luck.
The computer time was way off as well: May ## 2003. So, maybe the
CMOS battery discharged? I dunno. Anyway.
I updated Norton, java, etc. and will probably have to update more stuff as I go.
As for trueServe, if the net connection persists, I can get it going. Man. What a pain! :ugeek:

I noticed I was getting an error on bootup, which I thought was related to the LAN connection:

PXE-E61 Invalid media, or something like that. Hopefully I don't have a bad mobo now, but we'll see.
I googled that; it's not LAN related.

just found this one for you froo...in mod panel 76.25.237.132 seems to be where you are now

Cool thanks stan. I'll double check that when I get home.
Installed a bunch of Microsoft updates, Norton updates, Adobe updates, etc.
Rebooted (power cycle) and the internet connection is still good. I guess it took awhile for
the router to 'find' the computer. I dunno. Anyway. :) I am glad it is online now.
I will try to get a trueServe instance up and running.

yeah I have to fire it up soon. The computer is still online which is good; just got paranoid about that after the fiasco I had with it .

I am reinstalling trueServe; can't find it on my computer for some reason. Strange.

I am also looking at 3d sites for their news pages, and my wife and I are helping with the Colorado Film Festival, screening films for entry. Most are good. Some, well, you know.

Had trouble with the lan card. I got that funny error: PXE ... check connection. I found an old LAN card in the dead computer. I put that in, and I never get that error. The one problem I have with it is, the connector does not 'click and hold' in place. As long as I don't jar the computer, the connection is solid. So I wonder if I should 'duct tape it' into place. Meh. Anyway. I'll try this connection for awhile, but I think it is going to work.

The old computer is definitely dead; I was considering hosting a trueServe on it. Got a new power supply; the cpu cooling fan was on, but there were no beep codes, no text on the monitor, etc. So, that idea is out.

Next thing is to configure the router (port forwarding, I believe it's called). Slow progress but that's due to limited time I have.

Ok I think I got it setup. I have to get myself to work but login and give it a go!

Click the two eyeballs in the trueSpace 7.61 Workspace interface, lower right corner.

In the top address bar type:

//76.25.237.132/1111

Enter a username (any will do)
No password required

Click the 'Remember' checkbox

Click: Login

And you're in. :bananacool2:

I need to setup a domain name again with dyndns.org. I can do that tonight.

spacekdet, you can still use trueplay it would just need a launch scene to open that would send you there to Draise's or Froo's, or just put the address in the chat window which works as it should. I'm in draise's space with trueplay as I write this... :bananaguitar:
