How often do the challenges ocur?

Post by Karthogen »

Hello all,

Just a little curious about the challenges that are listed, can someone fill in my blanks?

How often do they occur?
With all the new people to TS with making it free, is there any for the new users?
Is this name recognition only or are there prizes?

Thank you,

Hi Karthogen,

The challenges started in the Caligari TS forums, the old official forums, as the Monthly Modeling
Contest and the Speed Modeling Challenge. They were held each month and were informal. Mostly for fun. The winner sets the theme and rules of the next challenge and his winning picture is placed in a winner's thread.

Here is a link to the MMC in the old forums which should work for a few months http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/f ... y.php?f=79"

Since the threads exist in this forum I guess the challenges will continue. I don't know about the threads being locked or when challenges here might start.

Just to add to what Finis said, the MMC is monthly and the SMC a speed modeling competition that you have 2 hours to do a model on the theme, plus a week for texture rendering, then a week of voting so it runs every 2 weeks...

It is just for fun but from experience, it does help a lot to learn and practice, as well as get the creative juices flowing :)

What I would suggest though is that the winner do a little tutorial of his model. I know it is recommended in the old forums but I think it should be a requirement for winning, just to share some knowledge with the new users and give some tips and tricks to others that has been using it for some time...

I think Mr. 3D is the current winner so he'd need to start the new ones... anyone sent him an e-mail reminder?

I would be, but I still haven't finished my MMC from way back in December!
I'll get on that. :D

That's a YMC !

There's no reason to start a new SMC or TMC until there are people who want to play....so who wants to play ?

It seems like only you, nigec, and I are the only ones that want to play the Challenges anymore. I'm curious if anybody else is interested ?

Just start the SMC and texture comp and see what happens, if it fails it fails , but we will never know if we don't try ;)

Don't you have a challenge to extend nigec....considering I busted my @ss to finish in time. I already know how you and theuns feel. I'm trying to see if anyone else is interested. I worked hard on a new TMC model, and I don't wish to put it out there for free if nobody is going to play anymore. It would be nice to get some other enthusiasm here ! :bananadrum:

Personally I prefer the SMC to the MMC, the attention the bike/bomb got was a one off I doubt I have the staying power to spend that much time again..
Maybe we should consider throwing it open to other software, folks seem to be trying other things and what better way than with a contest

The SMC and MMC are trueSpace Challenges...thus to improve trueSpace modeling techniques.
If a monthly modeling competition wants to include other software, then it should be included in a totally separate Challenge.
I'll probably begin the new SMC in a week...considering the new Forum transition and the lack of previous participation, I put the new SMC on hold for a little while in hopes of gaing new interest again. :)

I agree with 3D, these are only for tS... its become like a tradition, a part of trueSpace which I feel should live on with tS as it continues to live on...

This does not stop us from creating other general challenges for other software, this is actually a very good idea :)

I tend to agree about preferring SMC above MMC purely because it requires a LOT less time to do... IF we keep the idea about NO TEXTURES so the challenge stays focused on pure "modeling"...

And even if we are only 3 who show interest, do it anyway, it doesn't matter who wins and we don't even have to choose a winner, make a challenge rule that says a poll will only be started IF there are 5 or more participants... it is more for the fun and keeping our skills and creative ideas honed IMHO...
