Free for non-commercial use... a great opportunity to get Blender developers working on that api.... These guys are clever.

But the disadvantage, (for me), is that RenderMan must be plugged into one of the following tools, Maya, Houdini, Katana, or Cinema4D.

I was about to mention that... those tools are not a part of my own, and they all are relatively expensive.

It won't take long before the Blender community is all over this. There are already interfaces for Blender to export to renderman compliant external rendering engines like Aqsis.
