Sculptris! Awesome new sculpting tool!

Post by theuns »

Anybody want to who want to try out an AWESOME new software tool, have a look at this one : http://drpetter.se/project_sculpt.html"

it is a sculpting that produce meshes almost like Z-Brush and it is SO easy to use! I was very amazed and surprised! First saw it in the CGSociety newsletter with this thread : http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread. ... n=20091221"

Had a look at DrPetter's website and downloaded the alpha version...

here are a fiew very quick images I did in about 5 minutes each ...

They did mention that on the thread over at CGSociety as well so the author knows that it does get picked up as a low threat but assured everybody there wasn't anything wrong with it... but be warned ;)

Yep, I can vouch for this app, too. It's surprisingly mature for an alpha, 3dcoat took ages to become this fluid (although it was more ambitious from the get-go).

I was trying to decide whether to fork out for 3dcoat or maybe even zbrush, but I'm having second thoughts. I'm going to have a hard look at Silo + Scultpis + Blender (paint/uv/retopo) before I unload any cash now.

That all depends on how many models you sculpt or paint......
If its quite a few then its a good idea to use Zbrush for sculpting and using 3d Coat for brushing on pictures.......Z brush and mudbox ae a class of its own
and 3d Coat .... i learned to love it too because i hate complicated UV mapping..
But this looks interesting I would try it if it doesnt mingle with my Norton....maybe beta..

The main real bonus of 3d coat is the painting with pictures and its realy simple !

I used Headus UVLayout to UV map the frogs.
I really didn't spend much time with this 3D doodle.

Sculptris and Norton's don't get a long. Nortons continuely removes
the *.exe fill and puts it in quarantine. I had to prevent scans to the Sculptris
directory just to get this program to run. The Author sucks in this regard.
The good news is Sculptris is amazing at what it does. The tools feel fluid and natural.
Polygon count in these type programs are the killer.
Froo needs to test his Obj Importer with Sculptris. Caligari crashed on me when I tried using
his but Luvv worked just fine.
I created the Ying Yang Frogs in Sculptris, loaded into trueSpace on the Model side using Luvv,
moved the model to workSpace, saved as an Obj, loaded in Headus UVLayout, loaded the new
mapped object into workSpace using Froo's Object Importer, saved the map as a png for Photoshop,
placed frogs faces onto map, reapplied texture in workSpace, adjusted map using the UVeditor in workSpace.

You really can't use these models for animation because of the massive polycounts.
TrueSpace can also do this type of modeling but the tools available are not as refined. Also trueSpace has
high polycount issues as Shike discovered years ago.

Not cheap my friend but worth every penny ( I still have some hair that I didnt pull out mapping)
its 235 $ with the discount they say but there is a trial so I would try it out first.......
Given that it does voxels and more......
like I said above it all depends on how often you need it....

Can't we use the reduce poly tool?

LeonRegis, you could try but the mesh is all triangles. Doesn't trueSpace use
Polys until rendering time and then triangulates them?

Still playing with my Playdough...
Another Sculptris model I created. Anyone for bacon? :D
This time the UVMapping was done in trueSpace/workSpace. I modeled the overall
head and ear shape in Sculptris and then continued to shape the nostrals and eye sockets
in trueSpace using the "Softpaint Brush" Subtract Tool. I used the Poly Reduction tool on Mister Hog and then applied one
layer of SDS.
This is another realtime render on the workSpace side. Textures created in Photoshop and applied in trueSpace.
Background and text was done using Photoshop. Lighting was done with two infinite lights. NO special Photoshop filters were
used on Mister Hog. He looks exactly like this on the Monitor in realtime. (Painterly)

That's a nice render Steinie, better then my efforts so far.

Before you run out and buy 3dcoat, my advice is to check out this app. It has a better interface, is easier to use, is free, and dynamically creates geometry, unlike 3dcoat. 3dcoat was a bargain for $100, for $300 I really don't think it's that great.

It's also only a month old, I can't wait for version 1.

Its pretty simple you can use the trial of any of these applications and see for yourself what you
need or want........and if it works at the polygon limit that you want it for........
At least i wouldnt recommend or non recommend you something I dont own a license myself and have used for some time... ;)
Learning an application takes a long time and you invest hundreds of hours learning 3d sculpting or painting....
you have to take that into account when you evaluate your investment ;)

Better for what ? If its for painting with pictures or textures this isnt what I found out but for sculpting no question Z brush is better and it also saves
lower res meshes with displacement map very well.....
which is a problem with Sculptris animating with the meshes.

Sculptris 1.0 is now out. :bananathumb:

It's awesome, and in combination with Smak and a maybe decimator or retopo tool (like in Antangeo Balancer or Blender etc.), you could do game models and z-brush style height maps for peanuts............

Also FYI there is a tool called Shadermap pro that can convert height maps to normal maps and vise versa, plus other cool things. Only 20 bucks so it's worth checking out.
