I'm not interested in anything that makes me dependent. Octane will not be my next render engine. I let the cloud computer for future generations who will regret to have lost their independence through dubious promises of a better world. Outdated? maybe. Suspicious? Probably.

Freedom is a word increasingly rare in the world of tomorrow as the visionary describe it. They are so great that we can not imagine that only our money interests them! :worship:

Just peachy if you are on a deadline, working on a project that could set you up for life and their server goes down

Over at Thea they considered running the license through a server but they had the sense to ask the customers.. who rightly said NOW WAY!! In the end they opted for a on off internet connection to activate the license, ie you put the serial number, name and email address the activation code is then emailed to you, works fine and as far as I know no one has hacked it as yet. I believe it grabs the MAC address as well as the activation code doesn't transfer to another machine.

I was initially not that impressed by Octane mainly because we dont know if cuda will be a future proof investment but now
I´m not that shocked either......
its just that i dont want to buy into a beta program where a company can change the deal ......

I buy a license under certain circumstances and want to live with that ....and not find myself having something forced upon me..
I understand Marcels concerns and I share them.
We will see quite a few other realtime renderers pretty soon so i guess they are shooting themselves into the own knee.
Pretty sad because the technology behind realtime rendering is very cool !

They said "Simply put, if we don't stop piracy of octane with this solution, which is going to make the workflow and licensing easier for
legitimate/paying customers, and give a lot of unique new features and freedoms, we won't be able keep developing octane at a higher rate,
and we might even not be around anymore next year.
One thing to note is that we'll be having a multiple server (multi-datacenter) redundant backend, so you don't have to worry about not
being able to use octane due to a server failure.
We have done awesome business during the last 6 months and have a lot of reserves, so you can count on the online service being available for a very long time still.
That's it, if anyone has any serious issues with our decision, please contact us via email and we will try to find a solution to your
problem."

It does seem effective but what Steinie said about the company disappearing would be a big down side. TS at least keeps working without Caligari. MS isn't disappearing but these smaller companies might. I doubt that the company picked this method without studying several but maybe they should have chosen another way.

That said, I always find it interesting when a company does something to protect its property and secure its right to profit from its product people always blame the company with no thought beyond that. Hmm, maybe if there weren't zillions of thieves stealing stuff then measures like these wouldn't been needed. The thieves are saints of course, no need to mention them, it is the company that's bad.

This company is defending itself from attack by plain old thieves, dumb kids who don't know right from wrong, and useful idiots who hate business/property. Fighting thieves will always create at least some inconveniences. A company may fight well or poorly but it is the thieves who made the inconveniences necessary.

My comments were not directed specifically at you Tyler. None of the posts even mentioned thieves. That is the point I'm making. Some even imply some malevolence from the company. They made bad decisions. That doesn't mean they are out to get you.

The letter stated, "We've already put a lot of thought into this." and "We have explored all other alternatives and have taken this decision after much thought ..." Doesn't sound like a few sleepless nights. It is unlikely that they made the decision lightly. That doesn't mean they were right though.

I doubt this will worry many people. You can't play WOW without an active internet connection either, doesn't stop millions of people doing it.

People that don't have reliable internet may look elsewhere, but imo it will hardly be a big deal for most. Perhaps he will offer refunds to those that bought in already and are outraged.

Somehow, I don't think too many will take up the offer.

If my internet goes down for more than five minutes I freak out anyway, so this is a non-issue for me.

I hope most of we are against pirates who wan't give money for programmers. But the solution of an internet connection is really bad. There is others solutions as activation by mail or phone only one time when we registered what we buy (and win a support). It is acceptable. Internet connection needed can handicaps honest people but hackers will always find a way to circumvent the prohibitions. And more the disability will be great, more people will be tempted by illegal solution. It is not only a problem of money. We must remember how the downloaded music became legal. First to counter illegal downloading, then by removing the restrictions to make it easier to use than the illegal versions. So more it will be complicated to be honest, more the world will be populated with dishonest people. Nobody holds the lessons of the past. Believe that the restrictions are to counter the pirates is a mistake of marketing or an excuse to better control us which is much more serious.
Ps: i hope windows8 will work without an internet connection...or it will be the end of many things.

I think there are probably otherr options too,, but I must admit that I'm not very knowledgable on the subject, but I have some software at work that is activated by the cpu serial number and it will only run on that computer. I also have Nero and it is some how controlled to run only on one computer and to run it on another one you have to go to their web site to activate it on another computer and then it is automatically de-activated on the other computer. Not sure how this works though, but it does. You don't need to be connected to internet all the time. Just one time to set proper activation.
