I do not use any 3d modeler here, no photo or scan. Just fun to do.

Here is a 3d model. Every detail can be modified and moved in one click. The number of polygons can be modified in one click (no SDS, construction is recalculated). The object currently has 8 million polygons but could have 32 million polygons if it was necessary.

I'll bet you drew it on your tablet.

I have a tower computer.
I don't think I could hold it up very long, especially to draw!

Yeah computers are hard to draw with. In order to get a good streak you have to really push down hard on it.
Then the trouble is erasing the mistakes.
Oh... wait...

You painted it on the side of your computer? Hmm, you drew it in a 2D program?

Yes. Pin Art is a good comparison. Needle length corresponding to a gray level. Just think zrender. The ideal is to use a vector graphic software (I use Illustrator here).
The export image in gray must be the same resolution as the plan to be used to create a displacement. And most importantly, uncompressed. The displacement does not like artifacts.
The difficulty is to think of depth when drawing. Forget the shadows. With practice, it become natural and pleasant. Must define the mean plane of the object (50% gray or a value corresponding to your needs) in order to darken for removing material, and clear up to thicken. Play on transparency for moving a relief (white) or a recess (black) which follows the shape of the object beneath it (This is what I prefer with this method).
This method is used for specific purposes, like a bas-relief complex. But it was his pleasant aspect that I love. The Bryce terrain editor is very powerful to make a 3D object with this picture. You just have to add some 3D object to finish the scene.
Here, only the "terrain" is shown. It is based on a scene which will be completed with objects from a 3d modeler. To be continued ...

Thank Rayman. Yes you can use the soft you want. It is what i like too. With a HD resolution of the picture you can do what you want. And the original on Illustrator is vectors.
Another idea : create a zrender with a 3d scene and use the result of your render as this picture to do a bas relief for a medail or other thing. And you can use the work to create a real model with a 3d printer.
