3D Artist Issue 4

Post by splinters »

I am going to continue the mag review threads on this forum. Can't see the point in duplicating and who knows when that one will close.

Anyway, a few things prompt me in this latest issue to stop subscribing. Remember that I got three issues for £1 and this is the las tof them so I am basing my thoughts on paying much more for future issues and I already subscribe to 3D World since issue 1.

Firstly, the great CD content has gone in this issue with only 'The girl' modle as featured in 3D world a few issues ago. Apart from a Maya tutorial...pretty lame. However, the content is great and fetures loads of great artwork and lots of tutorials. Really has loads of step by steps even if they are in Z Brush and Maya etc.

They really seem to nail the good artwork but I definitely feel a dip in quality overall this month. Oh, and the cover image is a Daz girl with bright red hair which only got a small gallery slot a few issues ago...Mmmmmmm

Anyway, until next month (or 3D World arrives).

don't you think that 3DWorld has better art and coverage? I must admit that the few times I have peeked at both at the local news agent, 3D World always seem to look better... not sure about the CD content though...

Hands down, 3D artist wins on artwork. At times it looks like a Ballistic book with all the lovely full page stuff. I just can't justify buying two mags with such similar themes and content. By default I keep with 3D World after collecting all 118 issues...maybe I can pick up the other mag as and when it has decent CD content.

Thanks Splinters.... given my limited budget for subs and pubs I think I will follow your lead and not subscribe.... it seems to work better to compare the mags at the shop and buy the ones that help.

Yeah, I gotta remember to cancel the 'real' subscription before they take the quarterly charge. It does work out cheap but, as I said, this is the first month I saw real 'clashes' between the two mags and I have 3D World since issue 1 so, by default, I would keep collecting that one. Plus Jim Thacker (the editor) is a really nice guy and ran the Buddy World letter and links without any persuasion... :worship:

Further evidence, if needed, of 3D Artists declining standards; they have asked for some background info on a piece of my artwork (the Chav image) along with wire render and hi res pic. I think this is for the gallery features they run.
Now, not to do my own work down but that is hardly the standard of work they have shown in previous months.

Running out of content?

We shall see.

P.S I don't get paid for this or even a free sub...shocking ;-)

Nah I wouldn't be too hard on your work nor on 3D artist, I had a look and signed up myself and it may just be because you're the most viewed gallery on the site, must actually get my hands on one of these mags at some poit....

Not so Paul.
I just happen to be looking at your Gallery at 3DArtists
last night. (ok I'm a stalker)
First fact is your Gallery is one of the
favorites and second fact is your "Chav" had 88 views with a perfect
"5" rating.

Mmmm...I wasn't aware of those facts. Kind words indeed but some of the images in the mag have an immense amount of detail in them especially when printed at large size. As the person who created this image, I just don't see how mine would stand up at that size.

Not looking for compliments...just being realistic.... :)

I have to admit, that some of the art on display in the 3D Artists gallery is pretty superb stuff. But then again, it should be. After all, a lot of it has been created by full time professionals using software that costs thousands of pounds. However, I think it would be very remiss of the magazine not to look at their own website and see what art is being viewed by the magazine buying public. And, with your gallery riding at the top of the viewing figures, Paul, surely it is only common sense the editor should make enquires about an image for publication. Anyhow's, keep up the good work, you are an inspiration to us all and I look forward to seeing some of your work in a future issue.

Oh yeah, almost forgot, with regards to the mag itself, I must agree the mag has gone of the boil. As you said, the images in the mag are great, some of the best around, although I have seen quite a lot of it before in various other on-line galleries. The one major bug -bear I have with the mag is the quality of the tutorials. I was very keen to get home after purchasing issue 3, as splashed across the front cover, was "step-by-step tutorial of Materials in Modo". Having downloaded the Modo 30 day trial a day or two beforehand, I eagerly set about the tut. But the reality is, in the article they really just discuss the issue in general terms and you would have to be fairly clued up on the software to gain any use from it. Anyone who owns/remembers the Computer Arts 3D Specials and the fantastic tuts they use to run, will be bitterly disappointed at the 3D Artists breakdowns.

Extreme detail in modeling (like 400,000 pieces of litter on the street) doesn't seem, to me, to be your style. The semi-cartoon, large smooth or shaded areas, style you use should look good at any size. You obviously have great technical skill, but I've always found the strengths of your art to be the "expressiveness" of the characters, the composition in colors and placement of items and lighting ... even camera view. The way you bring it all together is great.

Render one at large size, print it out to see a high res picture, and see if you are happy with it.

Even if you aren't the publicity would help you so give 3D Artist what they asked for and get your name, your art, and Buddy World in front of all those eyes.

Since you are a teacher maybe you can succeed where others could not (never my fault of course) and educate me about the meaning of "Chav".

Wikipedia:
Chav is a derogatory term applied to certain young people in the United Kingdom. The stereotypical "chav" is an aggressive teenager or young adult, who is usually, though not always, of working class background,[1] who often engages in anti-social behaviour,[1] and is often assumed to be unemployed or in a low paid job. It first appeared in English dictionaries in 2005.[2][3] The term Charver is more widely used in Yorkshire and North East England.

But a picture paints a thousand words....

On a similar note, has anyone noticed that the gallery over at 3DArtist seems to be completely taken over by poser ladies in the last few days?

Never knew that something like a Poser lady existed !
What does she do that is so special ?
Poser is an animation program that has some pretty awsome controls and Daz studio which is
free has more controls then Truespace has. There is a setup tool with which you can setup all
your own characters (like Harold) and rig him just like you would with Truespace
So that doesnt make him a Poser man does it ? ;)

I have used poser but only for school projects to get a 'mannequin' to pose with a product or piece of furniture.

Each to their own regarding program etc. but I like to make a character from scratch; not morph an existing one. They all end up looking intrisically 'the same'... ;)

Paul I must correct your understanding of Poser........
Its an animation tool so that you can use your own characters and set them up either by doing so
in the setup room or by using Daz setup tools....... the setup tools are just about 20 $ now
Your Harold looks exactly like harold and the morphs that you make for him are the ones you make
in any good modeling application.....
It is a common misunderstanding that Poser animaton equals Poser content which was why i posted it here

Ever so slightly patronising Peter... :o

I have used Poser in some form since the early releases. I know what it can do and like most who first play with it, posed a few charcters/morphed them etc. but could never get something uniquely 'me'. And why is it that so many people choose to use it to make scantily clad women in various poses/outfits?? The woman who has 'taken over' the galleries this week with a plethora of images has been using the program for 5 years and sells artwork and 'oufits' etc. on her website.
Good for her but I personally would not use it to 'create' an image; I like to start with polys and craft something unique to my vision.
Each to their own.

There is a very funny emoticon that comes with the setup of Carrara I think he´s here to do some testing
All I wanted to say is that Poser or this case daz studio is an animation suite just like motionbuilder
forget the scantly clad woman use it on what you create and try it on Harold.
Just because generations of people abuse the technology doesnt make it bad.....
