Re: U3DA Challenge - Totem/Tiki/Idol Comments
I am going on vacation soon and I really wanted to enter this one badly. Just too many things on my (spangled) plate.
Tiki's are one of my favorite topics too! (If you remember "show me your room" at the old Caligari site)

Would this do? I started one something for the challenge and before I quite realized it I had already sort of finished this: http://i.imgur.com/PltiRuW.png"

Re: U3DA Challenge - Totem/Tiki/Idol Comments
@Mikom: Sure. Interpretation of what the challenge theme means is up to you and the voters. Are you going to model that or keep it 2D? It is a graphic arts challenge so 2D is good too.
James? Draise? How about all you folks who don't usually enter?
Enjoy your vacation Steinie! Maybe a future challenge theme like carving or sculpture will be appropriate for Tikis. You could put them in as other objects (theme: office ... decorated with Tikis!) Or do your own non-challenge picture. Should so some "show us" threads here.

I have a sketched concept. Tonight I plan to start doing the preliminary modeling. I also have my references. I just.. need to hop to it!

Looks good James. Giant toes ha ha ha! Plants and snakes are good or you could put it in an unexpected or strange or humorous setting or such.
Good video Draise. I'm liking Blender more and more when I see what it can do.

That really cool James! It has a style like a kid's cartoon and great colors. I keep looking for the Play button.

Nice one Pugman1! It could use some cropping though. Some of the computer desktop is showing.
That's two great entries. Everyone still working on one remember that the entry deadline is July 27, 2014 at midnight in your location and you must post your entry in the contest thread here to be in the poll.

Might extend it one day if Draise isn't finished. The poll will still end on July 31 2014. Mikom you had something right?

Re: U3DA Challenge - Totem/Tiki/Idol Comments
I made it on time, with an hour to spare. I rushed it, could have done better and worked better on my lighting, but my pass script and compositing in Blender is.. getting good. I like the final result, not bad for nearly no render time, just manual work - which is much more fun anyway.
Hope you like it!!!

@finis
I started on something but I don't think I'll be able to finish it in time. So for now count me out.

Re: U3DA Challenge - Totem/Tiki/Idol Comments
Great entries!
Mikom, you can always finish your project independently. It would be good to see people making pictures other than for the challenges. That used to be more popular. Steinie too.
The poll is up. Vote!
Hint on making poll threads. Use the preview function to see when the poll ends and adjust the number of days it runs so it is right.

I've become addicted to the "Ctrl Z" aspect of graphic arts and its second nature that I change my mind, fix errors and generally remain mentally inconsistent throughout the creative process. The IRS workers are never amused about my tax return for some reason.

Re: U3DA Challenge - Totem/Tiki/Idol Comments
I agree with Steinie; tough one.
You all did a nice job.
PS: I'd really like to see some sideliners enter; makes it more fun (and trust me; you won't do a worse job than me so there's definitely hope). So, to put my mouth where my foot is (or is it the other way around?... whateverrrr lol) I promise to give you guys some real competition for the next one, whatever it may be. Heck, I'll even try to texture it.

Re: U3DA Challenge - Totem/Tiki/Idol Comments
Draise wins! Start the next one sir.
They were all good entries and had good modeling and interesting designs for the totems or Tiki's. I liked James' because it was imaginative. It looked like a frame from a cartoon. I wanted to click "play" to see it animated. Pugman1's made me want to hike there. Draise's had a strange effect almost like it was 3D as well as the look of something very small photographed at high magnification.

Re: U3DA Challenge - Totem/Tiki/Idol Comments
Thanks everyone. I voted for you James! It was an awesome world.
And thanks everyone who voted for me. I had great fun making that totem pole. I will release a turntable video in HD on youtube soon, and some breakdowns and tutorials for my pass script in gratitude.
The next competition, let me think on it for a day, and I'll then do it.
This one was a lot of fun.
