I like this! Especially that it requires an original concept (not Star Wars etc.) and a character.
You might want to emphasize that a character is required. That could cause confusion or frustration if overlooked by any contestants.
For those without DAZ/poser/makehuman or skill in modeling characters can the character(s) be robots, mechs, or non-humanoid (easier to model)?
Daz tip: if you model clothing and import it into Daz there is a tool to transfer the rigging of the Daz character to the clothing so it will move with the character.
(Typo "Straw Wars". It could be a hillbilly or farmer spoof of SW.)

Seems nice. Been wanting to work more on my own scifi products... like the Alkathosk one. If I did a seperate part of that world, would it qualify?

Done and done.Finis wrote:You might want to emphasize that a character is required. That could cause confusion or frustration if overlooked by any contestants.
Sure, the character can be anything from a mech to a squirrel. Even an aircraft in focus that would suggest a character inside of it would do.Finis wrote:For those without DAZ/poser/makehuman or skill in modeling characters can the character(s) be robots, mechs, or non-humanoid (easier to model)?

Yeah you can use your project Alkathosk if you like. As long as it isn't a pre-made character.Draise wrote:Seems nice. Been wanting to work more on my own scifi products... like the Alkathosk one. If I did a seperate part of that world, would it qualify?

Re: Fantasy/Sci-fi World - January 2014 - Comments
My entry. It was a bit of a hassle to get all of this to work together. Many exports to various programs. I tried out Bryce and Daz3D for this one. I'd say I probably made more near-final renders for this one than for any other scene I've ever made. I scrapped most of them though. Both Daz and Bryce and interesting tools to use but quite frankly the render engine in Daz Studio is terrible unless you want to create barbie-dolls and Bryce is well... Bryce. I like Bryce when I'm making a scene that Bryce agrees with.
Ultimately I went back to our beloved trueSpace though.
I think the scene turned out quite well and at least I got more of a say in how the render turned out than if I had made it in say Daz or Bryce.

Re: Fantasy/Sci-fi World - January 2014 - Comments
Great entry. It has a feel, an atmosphere, to it.
Daz's renderer is 3Delight (here) but there is little access to it's awesomeness. It seems tuned in Daz for "barbie dolls". When I found that it was 3Delight I was going to use Daz for my renderer but then was disappointed. Lightworks, TS model side renderer with the model side interface is hard to beat for ease of use and versatility. It is even better now (here).

Thanks Finis. If only the current version of Lightworks was compatible with trueSpace... that would be epic.
I added a backstory as well now. To the post in the main thread.

I'm enjoying your entry mikom! I am noticing the deadline ending soon. I'm crunching many things right now, I dunno how I'm going to be able to whip out anything soon, I wish there was more time to do it!

@Draise
Well if everybody agrees on this, I suppose we can extend the deadline. Considering how long it took me to make my entry with gratuitous amounts of free time, I would imagine people with jobs (or lives that extend beyond the occasional Minecraft break) would need even more time to complete their entries.

I'd like an extension. I can do something by the current deadline but there might be more participants with more time. It is up to you. Winner has the power.

Probably won't participate in this one. Installed Windows 8.1 and it removes all the apps, so there is a lot of re-installing to do and I'm in no hurry to do that humdrum job.
Will get back to it when I get back to it.

Yeah, nothing creative on the computer yet. Win 8.1 Even uninstalled Adobe cs3 creative suite - not sure if adobe will even let me re-activate it... cause it's so old. hehFinis wrote:That's why Scapino didn't get a famous James birthday cake.

Updated my entry with a better render, hope that's ok. Thanks to the 4GB patch I could now do an actual render in one go instead of piecing together several layers. I think this render looks much better.
All other pictures featuring the scene I made will not be in this contest but can be found in this thread in my artists folder.

Oh my... that was a close call but at the very last minute a whole three more entries came rushing through the floodgates.
Great entries all! I guess that since we're all done here I can start the poll right away and it will run for a week from today.

I see a couple of polys with reversed normals James.
I was too lazy to fix them, so I just shined a light the same color as the texture on them.

There's a tie. I propose that we leave this poll open until someone votes and breaks the tie. No need to start a tie breaker poll.

Or, you both could win and then decide who will determine what the topic of the next challenge will be, while the other puts restrictions on that challenge.
e.g. Finis and Steinie wins:
Finis decides the next contest will be about buildings that more vertical than horizontal.
Steinie agrees, but puts the restriction on the contest that all buildings must have one purple animated eye and feet with a certain number of toes.
Just saying...

Particularly interesting James given the theme I have in mind if I win.
How about trial by combat to break the tie.
How about sudden death, no not by combat: As soon as a contestant has more votes than the others he wins. Which still means more votes are needed. Vote! vi ... =66&t=4356

It was a horse race until your horse took off Finis!!!
It looks like Finis is going to win this Challenge which was hard fought.
I'm glad Dragneye started pulling up the rear too! Every entry I enjoyed as it was developed. This was a fun challenge and I want to
thank Mikomdude for extending the deadline so more people could enter (ME!). Very creative works by Mikondude and Draise whose entries
make me want to try harder. Finis always has a great back story and reason behind all his works. Bravo!

Congrats Finis. You may start the new challenge!
In other news, I may have things sorted out temporarily, as in, I once again have a net connection on my main PC. Still, it's not exactly an upgrade so I will get something else eventually.

Re: Fantasy/Sci-fi World - January 2014 - Comments
Thanks everyone. I'm dead tired from work so I'll make the threads tomorrow. Here's a sneak peek:
- Theme: teamwork
- You can participate as teams or individually or both.
- Rules for teams:
-- Each team must have a name.
-- Teams must have 2 people and not more.
-- No one may be on more than 1 team.
-- Members of a team work together to produce and submit entries under the team name.
-- Each team may choose its own theme(s) for entries since working as a team meets the challenge theme.
-- Teams must post an announcement of their team name and membership in the challenge comments thread.
-- If a team wins then its members work together to choose a theme and rules for the next challenge.
- Rules for solo artists:
-- Participants can work individually.
-- Solo artists must use the theme of teamwork for entries.
-- Solo artists must post an announcement of their solo status in the challenge comments thread.
- Dual citizenship:
-- A participant may be on one team and also produce his own entries as a solo artist but only if the other team member agrees to allow the solo work.
Otherwise the rules will be like mine from previous challenges.
--------
I voted for Steinie's entry because he had multiple hand made characters. Otherwise it would have been difficult to pick. I hope Dragneye finishes his.
Steinie, I just had the vague idea of a pleasant future with super-tech at first but I do have a back story now. It is still conceptual but I'll post it if I finish it. I still wanted the challenge entry to not have a story so viewers would imagine their own.
