The thread title is pretty much it. I keep crashing 7.61 with trivial work, such as creating an ellipsoid and sliding a material patch around on it. I want 7.61 so I'll be able to use VRay once I feel up to the challenge, but until then it's soooo troublesome that I'd prefer to work in 7.6, which crashed very rarely.
I see a lot of DLLs in the application directory, which is good for my purposes. But I don't know whether other files in shared locations that might mess things up. Reading the forums seems to show it's okay to install both, but I'd like to be certain before I reinstall 7.6.
Thanks,
Meffy

Just keep both versions in their own directories and they will run fine.

Wonderful, thanks. Weirdest thing -- after the crash I could swear two wood-textured pieces changed to plain color. I'll have to be careful when using 7.61 so I can come up with reproducible steps for blow-ups instead of the heartfelt (but useless to developers) "arrgh!"

I use 7.6 model side (which is in essence TS 6.6) and it seems crashy compared to TS 5. You could work in TS 7.6 and then load the final scene into TS 7.61 for rendering with VRay.
I make a backup scene and save to it periodically. Also save to the main scene before major or risky operations. You'll learn which ones are risky.
There are other renderers you could use. Some of Rayman's posts tell about Kerkythea which is free and Thea which is not. I don't know how you get your scene into them but he has done some impressive things with them.
Will the solid textures that used to be wood change? That is, can you apply a new texture? I've had a similar experience where the texture became unchangeable. I had to remodel the object from scratch.

Just glue the scene together and export as an obj... thats all you have to do... then set your lights and camera..Finis wrote: There are other renderers you could use. The problems I run into don't even require rendering, they happen while moving a material rectangle around on a simple primitive. Weird. I'll get back to my real project later today and will see how it goes using both.
So far the "changed wood" can be re-painted in wood texture, but after a crash the tS UI isn't completely responsive. Clicking and holding an icon with a fly-out doesn't make it fly out. I'll try to document any further oddities in a less haphazard way.
Muchly appreciated!

I bet your revolving the material using the UVmap editor at least that is where my crashes sometimes happens. Instead I apply the material on the object in the main view and revolve the texture in the main view right after applying a UV map. I haven't crashed using this method.
The UV editor is flaky sometimes.

Didn't even have the UV editor up, just applied a patch, then resized it and moved it around on a sphere stretched into an ellipsoid, which was the only object in the scene. Happened two or three times.

Do you mean the material rectangle UV? Here is another way to apply a texture patch or decal: vi ... hp?p=29331"

Ha! Reminds me of the science of Eruntics, as related by Stanislaw Lem:

Thanks for the tip, I'll give that a try too.
