Finis - Cartoon Character Challenge Hear-O
This is Hear-O. When his super hearing detects trouble he notifies other superheroes who stop the villain.
Still working on his legs, feet, and face.
He started as a sphere and point editing with lots of sweeps and moving and scaling created the shape. I used the mirror modeler for the first time on this project.

Re: Finis - Cartoon Character Challenge Wip
Thanks y'all.
Here he is with legs, feet, and some adjustments to his face. I won't make any more muscles or much more detail for him since I can't spend too long on this. He will get a texture for a costume. No time right now to learn Daz or Messiah to rig and pose him. He needs eyes. Suggestions?

Hehe, I'm really starting to like this character.
Maybe a little more complex hands, longer fingers perhaps. As for the eyes, he could have bug-eyes or catlike eyes. When posing, those ears could give him a very defining look, make sure you make him look heroic

Re: Finis - Cartoon Character Challenge Wip
Yes, some work on the hands needed. No posing due to no time to do it. Here are some textures. Not sure about them yet. He has eyes but detail needed there. Bug eyes advantages: easy geospheres and unfocused look is like cartoon blind eyes giving impression that he can see but it isn't his main sense.
I thought about re-proportioning him but realized that would make him more human. I'll leave him humanoid.
To do: maybe some face work for eyelids or detail around there, hands, texture and suit logo.

Re: Finis - Cartoon Character Challenge Wip
Here he is with a symbolic sound logo. It was difficult to put the logo on. The material rectangle icon was not active so I made the texture with a lot of extra space around it. Room to move and scale it. Then I selected the suit polygons and applied cylindrical UV. I added a second layer to the suit texture and used scale and offsets to place the logo. TS crashed when trying to apply it with the replace material function. That stopped when I changed render from raycast to scanline.
I changed his face for the eyes and changed his hands.
What about his clothes? He looks Jack LaLane. Should his suit be as is, short sleeve, full sleeve, or what?
James, if I have time I might make another one with those. Good logo!
DarkScythe, I worked on his hands. Big feet? Has potential.
trueSpace 7.6 model side.

Now he has a shirt. I used Look At to point each eye at an object in front of him so he won't have the 1000 yard stare. I'll make a scene for him. Proabably standing on a balcony high on a building listening.

Above the city there stands a Hear-O. Watching. Listening.
I'll work on his expression and the lighting and shape his hands to grasp the rail. I beefed up his legs some. They seemed too small for his arms.
Thanks Froo and DarkScythe.

This is shaping up nicely Finis. I like the scene you have him in. Maybe dirty up the railing a little.

Re: Finis - Cartoon Character Challenge Wip
Thanks! Some grunge would help but I have little time for improvements.
The lighting is one infinite light for the moon, two for light from the streets, and two cones for lighting on the building.
His hands are wrapped more around the rail and his expression is less like a happy puppy. I was going to move his head some to look down a little but without bones getting his eyes moved correctly too was too difficult.

Re: Finis - Cartoon Character Challenge Wip
Well, I think, if I have time, I'll use TS 5 to adjust his expression starting with Happy Puppy. TS 5 works better for me in seeing the SDS surface while editing the control mesh. TS 7.6 requires use of a 3D widget to do that and the widget isn't convenient often. I prefer not to use the 3D widgets anyway. Almost had a day off today to work no this.
Lighting advice? I want it to be mostly dark but the character illuminated enough to show some detail. I'll change to a higher contrast version of the background so city lights are bright but the rest can be darker.
The background image neither casts nor receives shadows and has no diffuse or other reflection. That way its brightness is controlled by luminosity only and is independent of the lighting so I can easily adjust it to match the rest. It has the same image as a bump map.

Re: Finis - Cartoon Character Challenge Wip
I might have some more time to work on this. I had some success changing is expression in Hexagon. I hope to change the expression, change his head shape some, and add a simple feature to the back of the head.
How about some lighting advice? Lighting goal described previously.
TS 7.6 model side and maybe Hexagon.

Re: Finis - Cartoon Character Challenge Wip
What I want to do is see and edit the SDS control mesh while also seeing the resulting SDS surface. TS5 does this well. You set the display mode to DX solid and enter point edit mode. That is shown in the attached picture. You can add the SDS result mesh with DX with wire modes.
TS 7.6 model side (TS 6.6+) does this but a 3D widget is needed. I don't use the 3D widgets but if it works ... very slow and odd unpredictable behavior.
I'm learning Hexagon so I gave that a try but have yet to figure out how to display the character like the TS DX does. Hexagon so far insists on showing the complete eye balls inside the head. Kind of like transparency. That means I can't really see his expression.
So TS 5 it is for expression editing. I'll add a few edges for more control here and there.

Re: Finis - Cartoon Character Challenge Wip
Here is an update.
I darkened the city background and adjusted Hear-O's skin texture.
In TS 5, I edited his expression, face and head. The eyes look a little different in TS7.6. I might leave it like this since he looks surprised like he just heard something. His face has less pronounced cheeks, jaw moved forward, changed shape around eyes and mouth, and other minor adjustments. His head now has a Mohawk ridge and an indentation in the back.

Re: Finis - Cartoon Character Challenge Wip
Hands and face detail in previous posts.
Hear-O has 3200 polys unsubdivided and 48000 with two layers of SDS. I changed the lighting. He is composed of a body, a vest, and two eyes.
The city background is from http://www.morguefile.com" (free pictures with requirement you must modify them).
This is probably my entry but critiques and suggestions welcome.

Your attention to the detail is really good! The hands are impeccable, and love their structure. Good job there, very good if you were to rig it and animate it! The only thing I saw was the rim around the mouth, having some inconsistencies with the border. But it is a great model!
Good work Finis!

Re: Finis - Cartoon Character Challenge Wip
...and what would his hat look like?!...
The hands and arms are fantastic! I like those big ears too. Radar and radio waves are definitely an influence in your design.
My suggestions are always the same when organic modeling. Don't make both halves of the model look the same. It doesn't happen in nature. Slight variations are natural.
Great job Finis!

Re: Finis - Cartoon Character Challenge Wip
Changed the city background and reflection plane to a higher contrast version. Adjusted lighting. Rendered at 1000 x 625 since contest rules allow larger images. Made wire image for contest requirements.
Thanks Draise. I don't understand what you mean about the mouth.
Thanks Steinie. Mirror modeler does produce symmetry. I might make a few alterations for asymmetry. The only hat I can imagine for him would be Mickey Mouse ears.
