Looking for Notre-Dame of Paris

Post by Emmanuel »

I am joining a team of architects who wish to design a restoration proposal for the roof of Notre-Dame.

At this early stage, I am looking for a free 3D model of the cathedral, to make a first render of our project and enter the architectural design competition.
Of course, if we can pass the selection stage we will have funds to buy a proper 3D model from Turbosquid or a hi-quality scan and start working for good.

I already found a free Sketchup model but it does not seem reliable.

Does anyone know where I could find a better model for free ?

Thanks for the links. I am downloading Assassin's Creed :)

Petitions have been launched in France this last week-end to restore the identical. That's the debate opposing tradition and innovation.

For sure, crazy modern designs like this one will not help :

Anyway, it is worth making a proposal, even for the fun of it !

Interesting to note that the first stone for Notre Dame was laid in 1163 and the whole structure was not completed until 1345. Over this time it went through a number of architect/builders as well as stylistic changes of direction. The famous flying buttresses were not incorporated untill 1240. Their inclusion allowed for increased size of openings in the walls which allowed for the beautifull stained glass. Point is that buildings have been updated to reflect modern trends throughout history.
However, I think making the ceiling glass would detract from the wonderfull effect of the light that comes through the windows into a darkened interior. Although we cannot, for at least a few years, visit Notre Dame, a few hundred metres away is Sainte-Chapelle, probably the most exquisite example of stone and glass in the world.

Any restoration of Notre Dame should, at least, take into account the light from the coloured glass.

Notre Dame is VERY dark, so a stained glass ceiling may have supporters ; but I doubt the majority of people will like that.
Most people just want the architecture to be rebuilt the same. At least the spire may be new, because Viollet-le-duc, the last achitect that made the design of the felt spire in 1843 was controversial.
