Here is what iv been doing the last couple of weeks all in blender .
Started of with a sculpt , gave it new topo low poly textured it modeled the wing feathers
added the feathers to wings neck and tail , the body feathers is made from 3 feather i modeld
then added a particle modifier made it hair the changed the hair to the modeled feather group
that took me 5 hours to get it looking right finaly renderd in cycles .
still to do are the eyes rig him and finaly make a small animation .

This is looking great! Glad you are mastering another software! I'm always wanting to do that, just don't have the focus or time enough to do it. =P

But good results, like what you are doing, though my only is.. the feathers look somewhat a little too uniform.

But I like a lot. What's the plan for the buzzard?

The featers are going to get a beter shader then rig the body and the feathers .
when i do a anmation with him you wont notice the feathers any more i hope
