Mars Mission - Animation Contest 2#

Post by LeonRegis »

As you know animations are the most difficult part of the 3D because it evolves everything (modeling, texturing, lightning, post processing, video editing).
I don't know if I'll do it in the deadline because as usual I'm too ambitious and it always causes problems :?
I already have two ongoing WIPs and pretend to continue the development of all my WIP but focusing the Animation.

-------------------------------

History: Obviously it's a spacial mission to mars and will be based in an idea I had when I was 8 years old, today I know that is impossible to do this way. But in that age I thought I was discovered the best way to travel to mars.

I'll do the storyboard, and cut the most is possible. Like: In my original idea of how the animation should be I thought in put the control base scenes some times when they get a problem but for two reasons I'll not do the control base (the famous ''Houston we have a problem''), first reason is that I'll need to do humans and don't have any idea of how do it (I'll try to demonstrate the mission without visible humans, but there is humans involved and in the spaceship), second is that the control base will take too much time (doing the PC, LCD's, screens, paper piles, chairs, room, light, etc).

Other thing I'll have problems is the launch, I saw some 3D spacial launches and it don't looks good and I'm newbie in 3D so I can't imagine how bad it will look. So I don't know yet how I would do this part, I'll need help principally with the engine fire/propellants that needs to look like fire (I never saw a realistic fake fire, it's really hard :| ) and the near camera needs to have the image tremulous (because of the heat).

For is this, please help me with the questions.
Will post the story board the soon I can!

Cya

sounds like a good plan leon, not sure how to do this myself but i'm also going to try... i'm sure there are some good animators who can give us some tips :)

for the launch, remember I had a space ship in the background of the 'robot's image I did that had fire and smoke? those are just flat plains painted with transparency maps, but perhaps if those just rotate the right way, it could work nicely for an animation?

Thanks Theuns, I didn't started it yet (graduation, holiday preparations, etc). I hope receive some tips from experienced guys too. About the fire: I'm not sure, but for an animation I think we need something volumetric, ie, with 3 dimensions, which is really hard to get, but will try to search about it. Anyway I'll do the launch scene lastly!

Thank you

Leons: "to have the image tremulous (because of the heat)."
Don't forget: when you are in the space there is no air and no difraction due to the heat.
you can use a plane with glass shader and bump map (why not animated) between the cam and the scene to create the effect of the heat. this plane don't receive shadow and don't cast shadow.

Thanks Marcel. Nope the diffraction is in the launch. :)
The project is based on Orion Systems, but with some differences. The only part that I haven't some kind of idea yet is the landing. :|

Here is an example of diffraction for heat. imagine what you can do with animated bump! You can also anim the plane and use alpha map. TS have a lot of possibility. You can do all you want without plugins: fire, rain, clouds and even animated water throught objects with collision...
sorry, i don't know more simple!

that already looks pretty good, marcel... do you have a snapshot of the flame cone shaders in the background as well?

i tried a laser yesterday with glass cylinders of varying transparency but couldn't get it to work :(

Use 2 cylinders or 2 cones. One red and a small yellow inside. material: translucency and glow.
