"Microsoft releases 3D printer app for Windows 8.1"

Microsoft has released a 3D printing application for Windows 8.1 called 3D Builder. It allows users to view, design and prepare objects for printing and includes a library of editable objects to help users familiarize themselves with the software....

Not nearly enough icons.

It's possible they gleaned technical knowledge from trueSpace, using it, along with other acquired technologies, as a baseline or starting point.

I have been considering getting a 3d printer for building stuff for folks but, I'd have to really define a target market / niche. I am not there yet.

Get a 3D printer and make really inexpensive 3D Printers.

They could have used the engine and just cut out all the icons, replacing with their own. That way they could expand later and just expose new functions as needed without having to develop them.

Who knows?

Well, I hope they did something with it.
I'd hate to think it was bought, left to die on the vine and then buried somewhere in Redmond.

I would certainly hope they did use it for something!!!

I wonder if one could buy TS again from them and keep on developing it?

Let`s say somebody is really able to buy trueSpace free like Ton did with Blender. Who should develop it then? It would take years to find yourself into the code. And you haven`t implemented anything then. Just tried to understand the code. trueSpace Workspace side is a code monster. It had its reason why the development needed this long.

Point is, there is already an open source 3D app. Blender. So the developer forces who are able to deal with a this high math stuff like a 3d render and animation software are already bound. The original developers will not return. They need to make money for a living. And the handful hobby developers here at this board are a too weak force to bring trueSpace back onto track. It was more an alpha than a beta. And is out of development since five years now. Which is a eon in the 3D world.

Let`s face it. trueSpace development will not continue ;)

Yes, what Tiles said.

Plus, why would you do that if you could? There is plenty of other such software out there and more being made all the time. True, most of us here liked TS best and few others, if any, are as easy to learn and use but that is no reason to obsess on TS.

If you have skills usable to develop modeling-rendering software you should get a job with a company that does that ... or if you prefer give your effort to an open source project. If a company had the resources to revive TS it would be a bad move. Much better to create your own or buy into a current development project (like MS did, they got the people, the expertise, as well as the code).

True points. Dreams are free. :P

I would kill for a better viewport in Blender though.

EDIT: What happened to that guy who started developing a windows 8 3D app with trueSpace concepts we heard about a while back?
