Black screen on render

Now this has happened to me before and a restart usually sorts it but not this time. When I hit either render to screen or render to file on a fairly busy scene, I get a few minutes of nothing then a black screen and a file with a size of 0KB. I checked RAM and CPU usage and they never went near their limit.
Thing is; I already rendered this scene but I dropped in a large model and now it won't render, even though I took the larger poly models out.

Any suggestions for a fix?

I think there is a thread in Caligari forum about this problem. I had a discussion with TomG but don't know witch thread it is.
