SMC 67: Unorthodox Devices COMMENT SECTION

Post by jamesmc »

This could be any device used to display, store, function or generally exist as something that is not only odd but could qualify as art in a salvage yard or a metropolitian art museum!

Examples I came up with are:

Velcro Wall Paper: Used for stroring tennis shoes, hang coats that have velcro straps or used as a velcro nurf ball target board. (probably good for a boys room they can just "toss and forget."

Combination Tire Jack, Steering Wheel Lock and Trailer Hitch: It speaks for itself I think.

Screwdriver and Potato Peeler Combo: Well, you know - bachelors have to eat too!

Car Bidet: I dunno, the thought came to me one day.

Toothbrush, Comb and Nail Clipper Combo: Good for the hygiene (cough) conscious traveler.

Flower Pot and Cockroach/Mouse Bait Trap: Yeah well, it's better than those black pieces of plastic.

Anyway, the sky is the limit. The key is to be unorthodox.

Contest ends Sunday 25 September 2011.

No refunds., Entry fees will be spent on chewing gum and dancing girls.

That is all.

Edit: Toliet Paper and Light Bulb display rack (example)

Thought I was going to quit the SMC's and MMC's for a while and finish other things. I'm addicted.

I encountered a bug when working on Pen Knife. A sphere surrounds the scene for reflections. I applied one of the HDRI images that come with TS to the sphere and TS crashed. There after the Caligari phong shader wouldn't work on that object. It looks like a matte shader. No problem since it works in other scenes and other objects.

The metal parts use the mirror shader and the grip is wrapped anisotropic. Lighting is an array of infinite lights, no shadows, pointing in various directions for general illumination and two infinite lights with mapped shadows. One shines mostly to the front and one from the back.

I used less diffuse reflection (80's) than I usually do (95+) and I think it looks more realistic.

Reading the comments in the comment section of the MMC, I extended the SMC until 26 Oct 2011,
so those who need more time to "get jiggy with it" can.
