For Blender Instances....

Use Matcap, it really runs a lot faster even than the solid viewport. Great for previewing where all your instances are.

Here is an example, that runs very slowly on my 2 gig card, but with matcap, it jumps back up to near 20fps.

Good to know. Thanks. We'll see how instances behave in Evee.

I've read about particle instances. Any other ways to make instances in Blender? This is not copies but instances that save memory?

ALT+D instead of full duplicate with SHIFT+D. The ALT+D only copies the object but keeps the same mesh and material data, so only one memory instance of the actual object data.

The other memory cheap one you can use is putting an instance object with the modifier "Particle Instance" and it will duplicate the mesh data to a particle cloud of another object. This also is way more memory friendly than putting the particles into the cloud directly.

The other is using hair, and putting the hair as an object instance. The only different here is that.. it's hair, and the same principle of "Particle Instance" modifier only copying mesh geometry and no other data is what makes it run relatively fast. In that scene, everything is placed by hair mostly.
