How would you...

Post by spacekdet »

How would you make a spoon?

Maybe I'm overthinking it because I'm having a heck of a time.
It seemed simple at first but it's turning out not to be.

How about make an egg... cut it in half... invert one half and position inside the other one... boolean subtract... add loop at fat end ... select faces ...extrude to make handle....

Probably a thousand ways to do this:

Today I Learned... that I'm terrible at box modeling.
Actually, I learned it a long time ago, but I'm still terrible at it.

Maybe we need.. the oracle to bend the spoon for you? Tutorial from The One? Red or Blue pill - *ahem* - way?

1. Create a cylinder with 2 or 3 ridges on the caps and 1 or 2 horizontal loops, maybe 10 to 16 polygons round.
2. Squash it.
3. Soft select (large radius) the center vertice on the caps.
4. Drag it down. (bowl shape!)
4.b. Squeeze, deform (more soft select or other deform tools) - make it ovular
5. Take 1 or two polygons from the edge of the spoon base
6. Extrude out
7. Multiple times
8. And then play with the loops to get the handle shape you want.
9. Eat porridge with the spoon.

Hope you make it.. ;)

Yeah the box modeling for SDS is the way to go. Use a mirror tool for symmetry. If the spoon has any flat sides or sharp edges then place extra loops or edges close together for the edges or extract the final SDS shape and point edit to get them. Alternatively, some software has sharpness controls for SDS that you can apply to edges or loops. That is usually specific to that software so you would have to export the final mesh to transfer to other software.

You can set it up so you see the control mesh and the SDS surface at the same time. That gives live feedback and helps you sculpt it.

Nurbs would be good too but TS isn't that great with them.

I Hexagon you could use curves and the surface tools then give the resulting "sheet" thickness. Box + SDS would still be best though.

Good that you are modeling something. Otherwise you'd have to be awarded the (primarily Texan) term, "Big hat, no cattle."
