my first serious character modeling

Post by bitkar »

hey, i tried seriously to make a first 3d face. Long time ago I only did one try, nothing serious. Iam not sure if I made man or woman. What do you thing it should be? :)
I used some reference images just for proportions (female) but didnt stick exactly with it, coz i wanted to make something slightly diferent, just my own face design. I tell you its kind a wierd to model a face, I feel like god making his first human :D You make a 3d model and it looks like its looking at you :)) ehm.. just joking a little.

btw: nice article/tutorial about realistic face modeling. Good advises there.

To me your face model looks female. If you would like feedback a wire
rendering would help us find problem areas. From what I see your model
looks great.
I bet you didn't do ears yet... :bananadevil:

The link you shared with us on face modeling is awesome!
Thanks!

That's awesome for a first effort! Let's see a wire frame.

thanks.. here is the wireframe, not the best, but it works :)
btw: I already tried to import it to tS facial animator plugin and its awesome - prediction of which point is where and in final it really works well with the gestures! i was amazed and well surprised. really wort using it. Originally i wanted to try the multimorph plugin for it.
to be "honest" its for one work project not for my fun only. Iam not sure if it can be woman :) but nevermind :D if I will make her nice... ;)
currently iam finishing mouth and will make some ears maybe (if she will not have some cap :)

btw: the hardest part is to fit the eyeball in :) iam not sure, maybe i have the eyeball too big, but it looks ok so far. I will have a more serious try next time. Iam gonna make some better head from scratch in future.

so here it is... the SDS control mesh (with nonSDS eye):

Yes trying to fit eyeballs are certainly a unique experience, mine usually end up overlapping one another which would probably be uncomfortable. I'd say you're doing quite well

Cor, trying to type that phrase innocently was a grammatical minefield

Very good work Bitkar. You have a real sense for proportions. The head seems to be very natural. Are you studying arts in some way?

nope. I study things on my own only. I started with CG in 1998. References helped with proportions alot. Some months back I tried to 2D paint a face, so this also helped a little, coz I gathered some info about face proportions (like eyes are almost in the middle of head, etc). But 2d painting was only a try and nothing serious came up from it. 3D is much better for me, for such complicated things.
iam glad you like it.

i had to remake eyes, coz it was just wrong when i made eye pupils, they were too close to nose. So i think now its correct and eyeballs are naturally big now. Then i had to make nose smaller, coz it seems big - it will be a woman finally :)
Added some eyebrow made in photoshop with brush. Iam gonna texture her a bit. Not too much detail, coz there will not be a need to. Some hair, cap and there is to it.

I can tell you - character modeling is very very challenging! I spent hours just moving SDS mesh vertices to get the right shape.

I only tried to make a character once. The ears were at least as complicated and the rest of the head.

Very nice job with the face. The only thing I can comment is the staring eyes. Look at this image of how the upper eyelid is:

http://www.shutterstock.com/pic.mhtml?id=57298372

The iris of the eye is hidden of the top eyelid and some of the white area of the eye ar more visabel at
the bottom. Look at people you meet in the eyes to see thats this is true.

Otherwise is a very good job. I couldn't do it better.

well. that pic you showed is taken from up and she is looking up a little. And mine pic is just the in neutral position, maybe i will close her eyes a bit. I will see that after I import the head into tS "head plugin", coz i dont have that experiences. But i still think this will hope and with gestures she will look more natural, not like this neutral. we will see, maybe you are right. But anyway, iam not that good so far, I need to make one more head to make it look more natural. Maybe I will make a better mesh next time.

pugman: ya ears cost me lot of effort to cover it, but i dont know if she will look better with short hair showing ears :) maybe some other version of her.

You have to make a hair that shows the ears. They are excellent.

During my university education in arts and crafts for 4.5 years I worked as a portrait painter in a theme park here in Gothenborg Liseberg

http://www.liseberg.se/sv/hem/.

It was a long time ago (25 years). The important thing I found was to get the eyes right and it's the thing I learn my students now.

I have to emphasise that this is not a negativ critism of your work. I have to say once more that you have done a very, very good job!!!. I couldn't done it better.

The important thing is to do the eyes look natural. It's hard to do. I agree, but important. The eyes are the first we see when we meet another person.

Re: my first serious character modeling

thank you :)

I spent hour and hour making eyes! :D I have feeling that I can do it only worse. And whats more - on this model are not so important, coz they will not be well seen (small model, not close ups, this model is now more detailed than i will need for work)... BUT I WILL TRY! :) (i hope closing them a little will help) Its reeaaaly tough work. I never thought that I would be able to make this level of character modeling as I tried for first time few years ago. I dont want to make those eyes worse so i will be very careful and will not make any big changes. I will put more effort in future. As I said I will try, maybe after all it will get better than worse.
or do you have some exact advise which vertices to move and where? (which part of eye to make bigger, more inside head, whatever)

another stage, propably final. Well eyes will not be changed. I think proportions are not correct enough. I think she has too wide nose, eyes to wide spread. I will use this experiences with next character project.

Yes the Eyes are the principal characteristic in a face, if you can draw or model realistic eyes with some kind of emotion then your face just changes!

anyone has the HELP file from facial animator plugin built in tS? when i press the help button, nothing comes up.

or anyone knows detail how to make working other objects glued with head? (i mean eyeballs, eyelashes, teeth). Basic heads have it. I know that head is supposed to be named as "head" and i would like to know all the details and possibilities of that plugin, which parts could work and what is the exact naming.

i see it more complicated... you can mix AI and art... AI can be a tool to use within the creative process. Often (in commercial graphics) it is a tool to make your work faster and more efficient. Its not all bad. But true, every good thing can be abused and it will be (it is) abused. But its just a tool. Depends on you if you use it right or wrong.
