Got a new bow today. I used to have a Samick recurve bow that was a great sporting bow but it felt clunky and not my style. Now however I got something that felt a little more like "my thing". I got a Hungarian Kassai bow and my father got a Korean bow by Kaya, the Kaya Firefox.

Time for some archery this weekend!

Hope I get a chance to do some archery before winter falls. It has also been raining a lot here.

That's not a bow. It is a piece of art !
I like these bows, simples, with no accessories to staibilize/sustain/aim. There is only the tool, the arrow, and the human body.

Here is my bow.
Okay, that's not a bow. It is the lazy guys way to fire arrows

It does the job though and I am having a lot of fun with this one.

That's a nice crossbow Emmanuel! How many lbs is it? Looks very comfortable to use. ...and that cat, is like "If I was a little bigger and that crossbow was a little smaller... dem mice will never see me comin'..."

You're right that it is a piece of art, named after the master Kassai himself, I used to have this bow but it's not at all the same. They are quite ugly in my opinion, even without weights attached.

What do you use for a target? (not the cat I hope) Do you shoot indoors or outdoors?

Nice bows! I tried making wooden compound bows as a kid, but I kept snapping them. I love those cats, I have one at work that almost acts like a dog. =P

@Draise Compound bows out of wood? That's quite ambitious. I don't think wood is the ideal material for that.

Quite correct, layering the wood was damn hard, the glue not strong enough, and more often than not I kept snapping it. But then I resolved to long single wood piece bow, near my height - with tapered tips. Not very accurate.. but oh well. I was what? Twelve years old? My memory is hazy.

Yeah the more traditional bows work better with pure wood pieces.

Did some archery today. Was decent enough weather.

That's a TenPoint GT Flex crossbow. It has an interesting feature we don't find on other crossbows : the ability to screw the bow at 3 different positions. At the closest to the trigger, the bow is easy to bend, and the energy should allow for interior practicing. I planed to use it for fishing, but I didn't tested this setting yet.
At the highest lbs setting (180 pounds I belive), it is a deadly weapon. It is also tough to bend without the help of any draw system : a bad movement can hurt one's back.
As a target, my daughter would not allow me to use the cat. The practice heads can easily pass through metal or wood sheets or explode bricks even 50 meters away. So I'm using a home made target instead, made of cardboards glued together. It requires 40 cm thickness though to stop the arrows !

I knew a guy who made chain mail. We tried a bow and a .38 special on a piece of it. Something like a sand bag was behind it but not sure. I don't recall what sort of bow or arrow. Neither penetrated. I'll bet that crossbow would get through!

Anything over 120 pounds probably would penetrate the chainmail. That's a bit excessive for a regular bow though, English longbows used to be that powerful but I dread the thought of having to pull that, haha.

Of course in the end the fibreglass arms started to split, and consequently they wiggled around there sockets, making it quite strange to shoot.

But seriously, you guys have inspired me. A bow, now there's a good way to spend some 18th birthday money.
