Import

Post by janetb »

WOW! I'm so glad you guys are still here!!! I haven't used TS in a looong time, and I am stumped on something painfully basic....:-(....

I have a vector drawing in Corel of a shape formed of cutout letters. The design will be cut out of a flat sheet of gold. I want to make this gold piece in TS, but I don't remember how to bring in non-TS objects..... I made a new object library for the piece, but I don't see how to import objects into it. If I hit Browse, it only gives me TS library files to import..... I have a large number of format options to Save to in Corel. What format is best for import into TS, and HOW do you import objects???

I'm using Model space in TS 7.61.

Thanks SOOOOO much for any help!

Bye for now,
Janet

I figured it out :bananamouse: !!

TS6 Files tab>Load>Object. I made it a dxf file. Interestingly enough, it came into TS rotated 180 degrees both vertically and horizontally....:-).... Will see how well it works....

Glad you found the solution! I didn't know TS could import from Corel Draw. I should try things from Inkscape.. hmm... you got my brain going.

And welcome back to the forums of trueSpace, an awesome zombie software that will not (on my account) die. :P

Marvelous, TS still so versatile after all these years. :bananacool2:

Re: Import of DXF

Post by janetb »

Draise: No, no--you can't import from CorelD. I saved to various formats in Corel and tried importing those saved files. With most of the files e.g., Illustrator, TS said it did not support the file version. The one that worked was DXF. But it is acting a bit strangely. Have so far not been able to do what I want. Will post again later if I get better results.....

Hey there. You could use clintons great FBX import/export 2 script for the WS side. It also does DXF's. I think it's more up to date.

The install is a little tricky, but worth the effort.
1. Load install script from the file menu
2. Should work.
3. To update to the latest .RSX file, uninstall it
4. Restart ts
5. Install the new one from the plugins manager
6. Should work

DRAISE,
Thanks but I don't think those would be of use to me, as they are 3d import/export utilities and my only 3d program is TS (believe it or not!)..... In the present case, I was bringing in a 2d vector file to turn into a 3d object so I wouldn't have to do the 2d graphics over again in TS. I work a great deal in CorelDraw, occasionally in TS, and never in any other 3d programs.....

..... just thinking. ..DXF files should be the one and the same no? I known it might be a 3D format, but essentially is made out of 2D info. The importer might be exactly what you need.

I think the only thing DXF RSX and FBX files have in common is the letter 'x', no...:-)...?

I tried out the DXF format from Inkscape, a free vector drawing program, and.. well I could import the paths, but.. not closed paths. (they had the last vector point missing - where it had joined).

I also tried out the DXF importer from the plugin I recommended you (from the FBX plugin), but it didn't really work.

DFX is an Autocad format... hm..

Anyway, that's all I can help you with. If you need anything else, give a holla.

If you can be sure to save as older versions of Illustrator or EPS. Truespace can't read modern versions of those types of files. I think truespace can read illustrator version 9 or older files. Also play around with the dxf import options.

Just tried saving as older versions of .ai (Illustrator) to no avail. I thought I had brought Illustrator files into TS in the past--it must have been when I was using TS 6....:-(.... Don't want to install it just for that. In any case, the dxf came in good. I had to boolian subtract the inner shapes, which went surprisingly well, except there are two spots with artifacts which show up when I make them gold material. Fix Bad Geometry does not help. Was able to get rid of them by playing with the mapping. Now that I am so used to working with Corel, I really miss all the graphics functions--like being able to have a popup for the midpoint of a line, or snapping to points when drawing a shape. By the way, I couldn't remember if there is a way in TS to make an equilateral triangle....?

Add Regular Polygon button, right click set to 3 sides.

Edit:
I did a quick test and version 8 files work from illustrator. So Corel must be writing it differently or maybe it's old version is still too new for truespace.

I actually remembered the r-click and select 3. But I can't find the entire Polygon Draw toolbar!!!! The Icon Helper's little animation opens it from an imaginary, non-existing toolbar in the center of the screen which, of course disappears as soon as the animation is over. Doesn't give me enough time to look at the other icons on the bar to see if I can find those. I find polyhedrons and polylines, but not polygons. Perhaps I'm looking right at it and don't see it...? Screen capture attached with all toolbars open.

[You can also see the imported dxfs turned into polygons, colored, glued, positioned, and lit. It's a pendant that says 'Jacques' in yellow gold and white gold.]
