Multithreaded rendering problem

Post by CdeB »

Hi,

Using tS 7.6

I have a Core i7 system with 4 real cores each of which is hyperthreaded to give 8 virtual cores. When I first got my computer I noted how much faster rendering was, I also noted that when you looked at the screen it was divided up into 8 bands which rendered separately, presumably reflecting the 8 virtual cores.

Now when I render an intensive scene it seems to be taking forever and I note there is only a single band. Something has obviously changed in the settings, but I am unsure whether this lies with trueSpace or some other problem with my computer.... In my search for possible clues I noticed a rendering button (on same line as Raytrace button) which says hyperthreading. Since this is a new discovery for me ( ) I doubt it was set on before. But of course since the Core i7 is hyperthreaded this may be useful.

Maybe somebody else has experienced this and knows the solution. I guess the same issue would occur on any multicore implimentation eg dual or quad...

It could be that there is an option (which I cannot find) which means that the renderer can use multicores...I know it was one of the features of the new trueSpace that it could implement with multicores...so in maybe somehow a default has been lost??

I am going to be away now for a week without internet access, (in case I seem unresponsive to your replies) but need to finish a rendering job for work on my return and it would be great if I could speed it up again. I have been commissioned to do the cover of the scientific book I am editing. They wanted to use a figure from one of the chapters and asked my advice on which one. Since there are no 3D illustrations in this book, I sent them an example of my 3D cell renderings, and immediately they got back and said -Yes please another one like that! :D
But I didn't manage to get it finished due to slow rendering times...

Any pointers would be much appreciated

yes I believe that option would be 'it'. :)

Hi Froo,

Thanks for the response!

If the it is hyperthreading 'it' the hyperthreading option didn't give me my multiple banded lines (that I could notice last night) which I used to have when the computer whizzed along..

I've set up another render during the day so I will now go back from work and see what it looks like.

Apart from Hyperthreading is their a multicore selection I am missing??

Just a shot in the dark, but does switching to 'Scanline' from 'Raycast' make any difference in the speed?
I'd test it here for you but I'm on a lowly single-processor machine.

By the way, 8 lines rendering at one time sounds incredible!

You have to have multithreading button selected for multithreading.....

Thanks all!

Went away for a week. Restarted rendering with trueSpace yesterday and regained my '8-banded' fast rendering.
Maybe the computer just needed a rest!! :?

Of course, I have no idea why the problem occurred and why it went away.

Something else I am noticing (for the first time) is that when I am in model side and then insert the current scene into the scene library, after this has been successfully carried out the remaining scene becomes corrupted regarding the texturing. Geometry seems to be OK. So, for example, with my cell scene (see Avatar -no not that one until 17th December), the one by my handle, the nucleus has a transparent window in it which disappeared after saving. The workaround is to then re-import the saved scene -which is not corrupted in this process and then carry on....any thoughts? ;)
